Pure Cocktal Lounge Delight For Saint Fans,
By
This review is from: The Saint: Music From The TV Series (Audio CD)
When Roger Moore played The Saint on television during the 1960's, the late Edwin Astley provided the perfect soundtrack, truly capturing the swashbuckling and debonair Simon Templer at his best. Like the early John Barry Bond music of the Connery-era, there is a cocktail-lounge feel to much of it ("Chaise Lounge," "Halo" and "Cantina" are perfect examples). Astley doesn't dissapoint however when it comes to scoring the action sequences, with songs like "The Saint Takes A Ride" and the infamous "Saint Theme" (which is longer on the soundtrack than it was in the opening credits of the show by the way). And if ever there was a song that encouraged one to snoop around, "Recumbent Love" is the perfect skullduggery theme. I disagree with one review in which the person can't recall any of the songs from the series. Upon watching the recently issued DVD series with Roger Moore, one can clearly hear a number of the songs, if not variations on them. Like many TV soundtracks, these versions are longer than the usual 30 to 60 second snippets they would have in any given episode. I do agree that the themes from "The Fiction Makers" and "Vendetta For The Saint" would make a perfect addition to the CD. The CD, a re-issue of the original vinyl pressing from the 60's, comes with an extensive booklet full of facts and photos from the famous tv series. The Saint was ruthless, romantic, arrogant, buccaneering, humourous, and suave. Edwin Astley has captured all of those traits with this fantastic collection. For fans of The Saint, this collection is a no-brainer. For fans of 60's cocktail, lounge, and spy music this is a must have. But grab it while you can as it is now out-of-print.

This was the name of a documentary about Edwin Astley and which covered his early years.I am Virginia Astley's biggest fan and collect anything associated with her.The CDs have long been overdue as the vinyl was only available in the States. I also publish a couple of books called THE ASTLEY/TOWNSHEND DYNASTY and THE EDWIN ASTLEY TRIBUTE. I have a photo site on PhotoBox of Edwin Astley pictures

Was this music actually from the program?,
This review is from: The Saint: Music From The TV Series (Audio CD)
Let me say that I am a fan of "The Saint", and the music which appeared on the program. I give all due respect to Edwin Astley for his skills as a composer. Very sorry to learn that he has passed on. I bought this CD precisely because I wanted to hear the music I remembered from the TV program. The music on this CD claims to be from "The Saint" television program, but I wonder if many of these tunes ever appeared on an episode of "The Saint". Track 1, the "Main Theme from the Saint" does appear to be a full-length version of the original theme. And while the other tracks do have a somewhat "Saintly" flavor, none of them really sound familiar. The melodies I recall are not found in this collection. Track 3, "Recumbent Love", and Track 12, "The Saint Takes a Ride", come the closest to capturing the spirit of music from the original program. I would have liked to have seen the themes from "Vendetta For The Saint", and "The Saint and the Fiction Makers" included too. I'm sorry, but aside from the Main Theme, I just don't recall hearing any of these tunes before. Perhaps the Astleys confirm that this music did actually appear in the program. I'm left wanting much more of Edwin Astley's music I remember.

Virginia, Jon, I was very saddened to find out that your father had passed away. I am a big fan of his music. This CD and the "Danger Man" ("Secret Agent") disc are a lot of fun to listen to, especially if you're a fan of '60s spy shows like me. I hope someone will release CDs featuring the original music cues from these shows as well. In the meantime, buy this CD, put it on, and immerse yourself in the world of suave heroes who defined "cool".

Virginia, Jon, I just wanted to say I was saddened to find out your father had passed away. I am someone who thinks his music is outstanding. This CD and the "Danger Man" ("Secret Agent") disc are so much fun to listen to, especially if you are a fan of '60s spy shows like me. I hope someone will one day release CDs featuring the original music cues from these shows as well. In the meantime, buy this "Saint" album. As you listen, immerse yourself in the world of suave heros who defined "cool".
