This review is from: Saint-Saens: Samson and Delilah (Audio CD)
Warning! This is not a complete SAMSON; it is a mere 51 minutes. When I saw this release listed I had it ordered within minutes. Here is the Delilah of my youth: Rise Stevens. I have remembered hearing this performance for all these years and was quite excited that it was now on cd. When it arrived and I saw that it was only one disc I was quite disturbed that it was not complete. I considered returning it. But then I listened. My advice: Buy it anyway! Fausto Cleva's conducting is quite remarkable; both Stevens and Del Monaco are magnificent. Although I am still quite regretful that this is not a complete performance I find that what's there is better than nothing. I am happy to say that as far as Stevens is concerned age and distance have not altered my youthful perception.
