This review is from: Saintmaker: The Remarkable Life of Francis de Sales, Shepherd of Kings and Commoners, Sinners and Saints (Paperback)
I'm a little more than half finished the book and will surely finish it, but even at this point I can tell you the following: The biographer certainly has credentials and does his work. But it's a lumbering job. Maybe it's the translation, but the sentences are convoluted and you have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out just what he's trying to say. Maybe others wouldn't feel that way, but I did. Also, I'm not at all convinced that the author understands mysticism very well, and mysticism was a very important aspect of de Sales' life.
But in any case, St. Francis de Sales was a wonderful guy -- a great saint, and the biographer does give us a fully detailed accounting of his life. |
