Johnny Kicks Butt on this one! In 1974 Johnny was in the midst of his Rock-and-Roll hero stage. I loved that period, not everybody does. This cd is a must for any guitar rock fan. Check out Bony Marony, Stray Cat Blues and Bad Luck Situation, and ultra-smooth slide guitar on Rollin Down the Highway.

Finally we got Johnny's '74 Soul-Rocker Saints & Sinners on CD and for all you Johnny lovers out there there is a special
surprise! An unreleased bonus cut "Dirty" from the albums sessions is included! One thing I noticed immediately was how
crisp & clear this Lp's master tapes transfered to CD. Man! Listening to this CD for a moment you'd think you got the guitar
slinger right there in your room. All the original art has been faithfully restored and just wait till you hear "Thirty Days", the
Soul-Rocker "Blinded By Love" and the super Funky "Feedback On Highway 101"... your socks will be knocked off!

I got to know Johnny Winter in the 1980's, through his Alligator albums like Guitar Slinger and his late Muddy Waters productions likeHard Again. It was not until much later that I found out he had done a more rockified blues in the 1970's, when people cared less about genres and a wide range of genres could reach the same audience.

Saints and Sinners is one of those 1970's album. It has more than its share of blues, even if that blues is in the subtext, sporting more than I IV V changes. The production is geared more towards 1970a rock, polished, some tracks even featuring Memphis style backing vocals.

Thus I got to know Johnny Winter, the rock star, which only raises my already lofty opinion of him. As usual, his guitar work is amazing, and if I had not heard the 1980's albums first, I would still rate Winter one of the giants of post-Cream, post-Mayall, post-1960's blues.

Johnny Winter and Mike Bloomfield, who helped him breakthrough to stardom, were critical to making true American Blues music popular to white America. Mike was more a Chicago style guy. Johnny was in the great tradition of Delta and Texas blues. Years later, Stevie Ray Vaughan would play a similar role.

Johnny's work covers every aspect of the blues, including blues rock.

For my taste, this is his best studio album in that category. (Best live album in this category would be "Live Johnny Winter And"). Part of what I mean by that is production. There's lots of it on this album, even (gasp) a string section on Blinded by Love and Feedback on Highway 101 and a horn section on Hurtin' So Bad. There's also lots of multi-track guitar parts.

For blues purists, this is going to be a major problem and I respect that.

But the blues is a fundamental part of rock and roll. So, I have no problem with a blues player bringing an authentic blues approach into that style. In fact, if you know Johnny's other, purer blues work, this album is a crash course on how fundamental blues is to rock.

One of the most interesting tunes is Stray Cat Blues. Here, Johnny puts an American blues rock spin on a classic British Blues tune from the Rolling Stones. (For my money, Johnny is far more devilish on this tune than Mick is. The musical version of DeNiro in Cape Fear.)

This collection should appeal to folks who like ZZ Top, Allman brothers, Elvin Bishop.....a definite buy.

This is a look at Johnny that wasn't often seen....pop-oriented, yet terrific guitar driven tunes. A classic album that gets better after each play.

This a must for Johnny Winter fans. It puts you on an emotional roller-coaster that takes you from one extreme to the other. You"ll feel the pain in the growling lyrics of Hurtin So Bad and then placed on the road with the top down without a care in the world to the easy boogie blues of Feedback on Highway 101.A lot of hard core rock-n-roll with Boney Moronie and Riot in Cell Block #9. A blend of soulful passion, guitar wizardry, and a great back-up make this one a classic.
