5.0 out of 5 stars JOHNNY GUITAR RIPS CLEAN & CRISP ON THIS REMASTERED CD!
Finally we got Johnny's '74 Soul-Rocker Saints & Sinners on CD and for all you Johnny lovers out there there is a special
surprise! An unreleased bonus cut "Dirty" from the albums sessions is included! One thing I noticed immediately was how
crisp & clear this Lp's master tapes transfered to CD. Man! Listening to this CD for a moment you'd...

3.0 out of 5 stars Guitar playing and songwriting not up to snuff for Winter
This recording is not a dog by any means.

However there are better blues rock recordings by Johnny Winter that contain more superb songwriting and vibrant guitar playing to spend your money on.

Such blues rock recordings by Winter include the bookends of this recording "Still alive and well" and "John Dawson Winter III", as well as "And...

Soul-Rocker "Blinded By Love" and the super Funky "Feedback On Highway 101"... your socks will be knocked off!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Johnny at his Rock and Roll best-no basic blues here, November 20, 1998

Johnny Kicks Butt on this one! In 1974 Johnny was in the midst of his Rock-and-Roll hero stage. I loved that period, not everybody does. This cd is a must for any guitar rock fan. Check out Bony Marony, Stray Cat Blues and Bad Luck Situation, and ultra-smooth slide guitar on Rollin Down the Highway.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all, June 5, 2004
This review is from: Saints & Sinners (Audio CD)
This album was released during the peak of the Edgar Winter Group's popularity and was an effort to cash in on it. However, that does not mean it is a bad album, it is pretty good. Stone County was the first single off the album and received some airplay; it is also my favorite song on the album. Their are several solid tracks on this including Thirty Days and Stray Cat Blues. All-in-all worth having, especially if you are a Johnny Winter fan.

This recording is not a dog by any means.

However there are better blues rock recordings by Johnny Winter that contain more superb songwriting and vibrant guitar playing to spend your money on.

Such blues rock recordings by Winter include the bookends of this recording "Still alive and well" and "John Dawson Winter III", as well as "And ... Live", "Captured Live", "White Hot and Blue", "Winter of 88"

In using a 10 star rating; for a blues rock recording, it would get 8/10.

For a Winter blues rock recording it gets a 5.5/10

5.0 out of 5 stars classic stuff, November 3, 1999

This is a look at Johnny that wasn't often seen....pop-oriented, yet terrific guitar driven tunes. A classic album that gets better after each play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sound The Fanfare, January 11, 2004
This review is from: Saints & Sinners (Audio CD)
This might be Johnny Winter's best record!
His playing is superb and Johnny (who was being overshadowed by brother Edgar around the time of this release)shows he can still get a handle on Rock And Roll!!!!!!!
Some songs on here are just winners hands down like Stone County, the E.Winter/Hartman song Rollin 'Cross The Country and an outlandishly good version of Boney Maronie with Winter's fingers flying so fast on the fretboard it will leave you giddy with enjoyment!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Johnny Rocker!, December 31, 2011

Johnny Winter / Saints & Sinners (bonus track): Johnny Winter can always be counted on to give you a rockin good time. This one has a couple of slightly overproduced tracks (in that typical 1970's style) but everything here lives up to his good reputation. However, Johnny was not known for his original songwriting and although a few of the songs here are his own, they don't reach the heights of his classic covers. Yet, this is a good, enjoyable album and well worth hearing and owning. Four Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars best johnny mix from the 70's, October 27, 2011
This review is from: Saints & Sinners (Audio CD)
As far as the original lps go Saints and Sinners is head and shoulders sonic wise above anything johnny did in the 70's. It makes still alive and well and john dawson the third unlistenable.
From trailer trash rock - Stone county to funky new orleans funk, Blinded by love and one of the best vocal blues performances johnny ever did Hurtin so bad this is the peak of johnnys 70's recordings as far as the mix down. I hope hes making any money at all off it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Most Listenable!, February 20, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Saints & Sinners (Audio CD)
This album is not the definitive Johnny Winter endeavor because he is known more for hard core blues, it is, however, his most listenable. This music came on the heels of both, his return from a drug-induced stupor, and the meteoric success of his brother Edgar's "They Only Come Out At Night (Frankenstein, Free Ride et. al.), whose crew helped Johnny out with this project. This is one of those albums that you could have bought back in the day, given a few spins, and relegated to the back burner. Blow the dust off and play it now, some 35 years later, and it sounds better than ever.
