2.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend paying extra to get a better wheel!

2.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend paying extra to get a better wheel!, July 3, 2001

I bought this wheel for a gaming rig I am building for a friend and went solely from the recommendations made from this site, which leads me to believe that no one that posted a review has ever had any experience with any other wheel.

First off, this wheel can only be configured as a 4-button, 2-axis joystick, which is easy enough to do but offers bad response times and terrible precision. Wheels that have specific drivers written for them have better control, hands down. My other complaint is that it uses the game port instead of a USB connection, which also slows down the response time of the wheel and other controls, but since this is a budget-priced product I can forgive that. Playing NFS: Porsche Unleashed with this wheel was frustrating to say the least, and after switching to a sidewinder game pad, I had better control by far. If you can drive better with a game pad instead of a wheel then there is something definately wrong with the wheel.

The other problems with this wheel are the small wheel size, which may cause problems with large-handed people, and the placement of the two buttons on the wheel, which can be hit very easily by accident, possibly causing problems if either are configured for a hand-brake or to view another direction. Also, the VERY light and small pedal base needs to be braced or weighted down somehow or it will slide all over the place (may work all right on carpet, but on a chair mat or any other smooth flooring will cause a problem). My last complaint is the quality (or lack there of) and flimsiness of the levers on the left and right behind the wheel, typically used for gear shifting up and down. I thought I was going to break these the first time I tested the wheel. The cheap plastic won't last long at all under heavy usage and it won't make you happy to have to wait for a warranty repair (though as cheap as this wheel is you will probobly just get another one).

If you want a quality wheel, you probobly won't be happy with this one. I suggest a USB port wheel, like the Thrustmaster Nascar Pro Digital, also available here, which is about as good as they come. Things to look for are a large heavy pedal base, a dual clamping wheel base (though the Saitek wheels' one clamp worked very well), and multiple configurable buttons on the wheel (two just doesn't cut it for most games and you will still be utilizing the keyboard), as well as a separate gearshift (unleass you prefere to always go automatic). I usually don't recommend a force-feedback wheel because all the ones I have tried become more annoying after a while and certainly don't immerse me into the game anymore than not using the force-feedback functions, but thats just me.

I hope this more detailed review helps you out with your purchase and have fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars great deal and it sure beats arrows, April 5, 2001
This review is from: Saitek J11 R100 Racing Wheel (Video Game)
I was scared when I first got it because I thought it was bad. It is just more sensitive than thought. Now that I have said this you are not so sure about it anymore. love it it could not be much better. I bought this because I like driving at the arcade and this is just about as good besides the othe extras at the arcade. It is a lot of fun. I have had it for about a month and I still play it almost every day. It is a good match with Need for speed: High Stakes

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Wheel Ever, December 10, 2000

I love this wheel. I used it with my kids and Sierra's Driver's Ed 1998. It is extremely realistic and surprising easy to use. I think this wheel is worth well over $200 so at under$50 it is a steel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Item, August 3, 2001
By A Customer

This A great racing wheel. To start off the price is great... It is very easy to install. I use it mostly for Viper Racing, and it runs great and feels better than a keyboard. It would be better if it came with Force Feedback, but its great for the price, if you want a good racing wheel get this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good But Made Cheeply, November 2, 2001

This game controllor is very delicut! I wouldn't sugest this controller to some one who is into F1, Nascar, and Need for speed racing games. How ever if you like driving games like Drivers Ed, and The Worlds #1 Truck Driving school this is the right cntrollor for you.

For F1, Nascar, and Need For Speed racing games I would defenently recomend the Thrustmaster Made by Fororri. It is by fare the best coputer game of the year!

5.0 out of 5 stars I feel like I'm on the road!, May 8, 2001
This review is from: Saitek J11 R100 Racing Wheel (Video Game)
Easy installation, and easy to hook on to the desk. It doesn't slide at all if I screw it in tight enough, and the pedals don't slide either, since they're on a carpet. Even if the pedals weren't on a carpet, I don't think they would slide much, since there are these grooves under them that provide friction. It's NOT a USB wheel. I use this wheel with "Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit" and it works great. It's really easy to slam on the brakes, or to make a sharp turn. The only thing missing from this is Force Feedback, but at 30 bucks, who cares? I may be a cheapskate, but 30 bucks is DEFINITELY an awesome deal! One more thing: in the installation, it says to uninstall all other non-USB gamepads. You don't need to do that. Just click the "advanced" tab in the game controller window (that's in "control panel") and set the ID # of the steering wheel to 1 (first setting the ID of the original "#1" to something else, like #3.)

I love this wheel. I used to help my children learn to drive with Sierra's Driver's Ed 1998. It is the most realistic feeling wheel and it is surprisingly easy to use. I would be willing to pay $200 for this, but at under $50 it is a steel.
