4.0 out of 5 stars Which remote is better?
The two remotes I've seen for the PS2 launch are this Saitek remote and one made by Interact. While I've never purchased a product from Saitek, Interact is notorious for making substandard accessories (working retail software for 2 years taught me that). Both remotes will control the PS2 and your TV but Saitek's remote has a pass-though port for the controller (to avoid swapping out the controller for the infrared receiver everytime you want to watch a movie - the Interact remote does not). If you're looking for a remote to buy at launch, this one is a better bet.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR YOUR PS2!!, October 2, 2000

I have purchased Saitek controllers in the past and have been happy with their quality and innovation. The remote is not only cool looking, but it is extremely functional. The pass-through allows you to keep your controller plugged in with the reciever meaning less wear on the controller/reciever/PS2 and best of all, my kids won't unplug the reciever and loose it! This is the only one that I have seen that does not block the USB port (the Saitek one is offset) and it matches the PS2 perfectly. I think I'm in heaven! Thanks Saitek!

For 2 days after launch I frantically looked for a DVD controller that actually worked with the PS2. Given that fact that INTERACT's remote had/has compatibility issues, ..., I decided to give the Saitek remote a whirl. The Saitek remote is the sleekest looking of all PS2 compatible remotes currently out on the gaming market, black/slotted design and blue infrared interface piece that compliments the PS2 look. The plug-in interface is the best as it fits snug into the controller port and does not block any of the USB,Firewire,or player 2 ports. Thus you are able to leave the interface in place and plug a game controller into the passthrough slot without having the need to switch back and forth from interface to game controller. HOW DOES IS WORK? ---- The remote is small, sleek and the buttons are clearly marked however (based on my testing) I found one of the buttons not marked correctly. Per the instructions, if you were to select a DVD menu item, you need to press the "Confirm" button(equivelant of X on the game controller) on the remote to excute the command... this was not the case, as the PS2 was interpreting the button as RESUME? After about 5 mins I was able to determine that the STOP button on the remote would work in the place of CONFIRM. Defect? Unknown? Also the directional button on the remote is somewhat "flimsy", you don't get a true sense of response as if you are pressing UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT. The CHAPTER FORWARD/REVERSE buttons worked fine. The SEARCH buttons on the otherhand are a little "hit or miss", though the remote interface on the PS2 will blink when receiving a signal from the remote, at about 10-12 feet the remote would not consistantly Forward Search or Rev Search correctly. The search would begin and then stop to normal playback, as if the interface stopped receiving the signal from the remote momentarily. Based on the remotes I have seen from Interact, Pelican, Electro Source and Saitek. The Saitek is the best so far in terms of appearance however the button issues hurt this remote's rating from 5 (for looks) to 2 (for functionality)

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleek Design, Solid Performance, November 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Saitek Playstation 2 DVD Remote Control (Video Game)
I got a Saitek DVD Controller a few days after I picked up my PS2 and it works great! I like being able to use it without getting up and unplugging the game pad when I watch movies, or unplugging it when I play games like the other remotes.

I looked at the others offered by interact, pelican and mad catz, but none of them had all the features, like controller pass-through, DVD control symbols, and clearance for other ports on the PS2.

Mine has the so-called reversed buttons, but its no big deal. I called Saitek about it, and they offered to exchange it for a corrected one, but I'm going to keep it, because it doesn't matter. They said the mistake has already been corrected in current shipments.

Its a really nice remote!

This remote looked cool when I bought it, but after a few tries, I swiched back to my Dual Shock2 regular conroller to play games and for the DVD functions. First off, the "Stop" and "Confirm" buttons are swiched, which gets annoying over time. Also, you really have to press the buttons hard or you will have to press them two or three times to get them to respond. Playing the game with the pass-through unit in is spotty, because sometimes the PS2 will pick up that a controller is in, and sometimes it won't (controller is plugged in all the way every time). One more thing, you have to memorize what the icons mean that are on the conroller or you will get them mixed up time after time. Overall, it's alright since there's almost none out, but I'll wait for the new version of the recalled Interact remote.

3.0 out of 5 stars Aaugh!, September 17, 2001

I picked up this remote for a very simple reason. I wanted a wireless remote for my PlayStation 2 so I'd stop tripping over the controller wire.
Amazon is selling this one for about 10 bucks, so how could I resist? It works well and performs without any trouble. The buttons are not positioned very well, but what the heck? It WORKS! (Older reviews complain of buttons malfunctioning. Mine works just fine.)
Four days after I bought it, I was browsing my favorite computer store and sadly discovered that Sony has FINALLY released a wireless remote specifically designed for the PS2. It puts many of the DVD functions clearly on the remote where you can't miss them. Direct track/chapter access is also available. Most importantly, a POWER BUTTON is included on the Sony model!
If you MUST have a fully featured remote for you game/movie system (like me), spring the extra few bucks for the Sony remote. ($19.00 at Playstation.com) If you just want simple DVD controls, the Saitek model is a good solution.
(Sigh) Now to find another PS2 owner where I can unload this Saitek remote. If I waited just a few more days... AARGH! UPDATE - THE SONY REMOTE DOES NOT HAVE A POWER BUTTON. I ended up ordering the Sony remote for the additional features.

2.0 out of 5 stars Looks nice, but Uncomfortable, Slow, and Buggy, October 31, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Saitek Playstation 2 DVD Remote Control (Video Game)
I figured I'd complete my Playstation 2 by adding the nice looking Saitek Playstation 2 remote control to the system, but it wasn't worth it. The remote looks nice and sleek, but it's too slim and it feels uncomfortable to hold.

The infrared module's reaction time was also a bit slow and the button commands weren't being executed right away. The receiving module has a light bulb that indicates when you are pressing a button, and sometimes I had to press the button a few times because nothing was happening. I must have gotten a lemon because my "Toy Story 2" DVD wouldn't play from the opening menu when trying to get it started using the remote control. Even pressing the "Play" button on the remote would not start it.

There's nothing wrong with using the Dual Shock controller. It reacts fast to the buttons. I got the DVD playing in a snap. I've since boxed up the Saitek remote control to bring it back in for a refund.

The Saitek DVD remote is best remote for Sony Playstation 2 I've seen. It is the only one that has the pass through so I don't have to unplug my pad when I want to use the remote. It's easy to use but i really like the design. I've a few remotes lying around and they all look the same. This one looks like it was designed to go with the Playstation 2, and i have no problem picking it out of a pile of remotes! Really nice product-I recommend

This controller works fine for everyday use. yes, i know that two of the buttons are switched around but you get used to it after you use it twice. since the interact one got recalled i bought this one. many people said that it is too small, well it is just as big as my tv remote and that is fine for me. Buy it
