the standard sakhalin historical reference, October 3, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Sakhalin: a history, (Hardcover)
Stephan has done a superb job of deciphering the historical background of this little known Russian enclave in the Far East. Drawing upon a limited amount of reference material he has been able to present an objective history of this controversial area that until recent times was a forbidden area of the Soviet Empire. Very valuable are the sections on the pre-Russian period which are seldom alluded to in Western literature. I hope that with the increased accessibility of both Chinese imperial source material and Japanese Edo period historiography, that the true scope of Manchu/Japanese involvement in Sakhalin can be fully understood. Until the Russian archives are fully open though this enigmatic island will continue to jealously guard its past and the definitive history of Sakhalin will remain unwritten.
