Promising and funny but overall disappointing, April 24, 2008
This review is from: Sakura Killers [VHS] (VHS Tape)
You pretty much get all of the good scenes in the theatrical trailer; plus, the theatrical trailer gives you every scene with "the Colonel" (Chuck Connors). For some reason the guy gets top billing, and he's really only in it for a total of five minutes! This is the bad thing. Trust me, if you're checking this out expecting to get a good dose of Chuck Connors, you're just setting yourself up for disappointment.
One good thing about this film is the choreography and stage combat; it is refreshingly comical. Another good thing is that this film is only 75 minutes long. However, the character development of Sonny and Dennis, which is hilarious for the first 15 minutes, as with Dennis's hypermasculine beach workout routine or Dennis's Tawainese boxing school, but becomes painful and tedious to watch after 50 minutes, as with Dennis's multicultural sensibility at the Benny Hannah's, takes the lion's share of screen time.
That's what you're getting with Sakura Killers: Sonny and Dennis. It is also movie that is set in Tawain, features Japanese characters and actors, and is almost entirely filmed in Southern California.
"Sakura Killers. Real Ninja 'sassins."
