Frankly, I'm just happy this title is getting translated at all., October 12, 2008
This review is from: Sakura Taisen, Vol. 7 (Paperback)
As a die-hard fan of the franchise I'm probably not the most objective consumer you'll find, but I love this series dearly. It cuts out some of the extreme camp you'll find in the original games and adapts it for a somewhat less compromising audience. It's not particularly mature or complex, but coming from an age where most anime tropes where in the process of being birthed, Sakura Taisen is an icon of its time.
I have some problems with some inconsistent translation and editing. Translator Yuko Fukami and editor Lilian Diaz-Przybyl do a professional job, but I constantly see portions of the text that could have been made to read and flow better. I understand that most of the time translators and editors rarely have access to original resources or official references, but these rough edges persist throughout each volume. Sometimes a special attack's name is translated, sometimes not, and so on.
And as with many properties that have their parts and adaptations licensed by competing publishers, varying terminology and naming riddles the text. For example the Sakura Taisen Movie was licensed by Pioneer, but its OAVs were licensed by ADV, and this manga was licensed by tok resulting in several different naming and term conventions being used across several properties.
I do appreciate that Tokyopop has taken the time to translate the extra material, including afterwords by staff and voice actors, and even the four-panel comic strips (4koma) that involve characters from the original games (such as Sakura Taisen V), which are unlikely to ever be released in English.

Continues the adventures of the mostly female Imperial Fighting Troupe, July 12, 2008
This review is from: Sakura Taisen, Vol. 7 (Paperback)
The seventh graphic novel of the Sakura Taisen series (loosely based on a Japanese video game) continues the adventures of the mostly female Imperial Fighting Troupe, who control giant robots in their efforts to defend their home city from invaders! But two of the flower troupe, the high-class lady Sumire and the tough fighting woman Kanna, have quarrelsome personalities. In a last-ditch effort to get the two to work together, captain Ogami feigns a stomach illness, prompting the two to investigate mysterious happenings in a haunted house. A hostile ghost lurking in the mansion turns out to be the least of the threats in wait - a powerful female sorceress has made the area her base of operations in her plan to engulf the Imperial City in a sea of flames! Presented in original right-to-left format so that readers can enjoy the creators' artwork as it was originally drawn, Sakura Taisen volume 7 lives up to the series' fine blend of action, fantasy, and heart. Highly recommended.
