5.0 out of 5 stars Sal and Sally, August 5, 2008
This review is from: Sal and Sally (Paperback)
I bought this book for my son Cary who has autism. He really loved the story and the pictures. He particularly thought that it was funny when Sal and Sally get stuck in a bubble and Nasty Nick, a shark who wants to eat them, cannot pop the bubble and get to them. It was a lot of fun and now he is reading it by himself!

Sal and Sally "All God's Critters Toddler Series #2 (A Book Review)

Recently I was fortunate enough to get a childrens book called Sal and Sally - All God's Critters #2 in the mail from the author Jay Miller. He sent it to me and signed and inscribed it to my two oldest grandsons. I thought that the boys would find that really neat and I was right, they were excited to see their names written in the book and from their new "friend" Jay Miller! Just getting the book in the mail was exciting enough for all of us but then we read the book and looked at the illustrations by Jessica Ball and were REALLY pleased!

Sal and Sally is a charming book about two small fish (sea bass) who live in the ocean. One day Sally is blowing some pretty color bubbles and she calls Sal over to share what she's done. Sal likes the bubbles and asks Sally to show him how to blow pretty color bubbles too. Soon the two sea bass are blowing pretty color bubbles and having a fun time. Along comes Nelly the Octopus who thinks it looks like fun too and asks if she can join Sal and Sally and would they please show her how to blow those pretty color bubbles too.

Soon all three are having a great time blowing pretty color bubbles when Nasty Nick comes by to ruin their fun. Nasty Nick the Texas Long Nose Shark wants to eat them. The story continues telling how the three escape and how Nasty Nick gets tired of trying to catch them and decides to leave. But before he leaves, Sal and Sally invite him to stay and learn how to have fun blowing pretty color bubbles too. Nasty Nick decides to stay and blow pretty color bubbles and even earns himself a new name, Nifty Nick. Soon everyone is blowing pretty color bubbles and other sea creatures are coming to play and blow pretty color bubbles too. Their happiness and fun is spreading to one and all.

Sal and Sally is a fun and happy book to read. My grandsons enjoyed the story as well as the illustrations which are colorful and cheerul. And I personally like how the book promotes friendship and working together without being preachy or stuffy about it.

At the end of the book are words to some songs that can be sung - The Octopus Song; Nifty Nick's Bubble Blowing Song and The Turtle Song.
There are also pictures at the end of the book that tell of other books in this "All God's Critters" Toddler series by Jay Miller that will be coming out in the future. They sound cute and fun and I look forward to those.

The author, Jay Miller, has another book out that is the first title in this "All God's Critters" Toddler series called Bingo the Banjo Picking Bear. I haven't had the opportunity to read that one yet but it sounds cute too from the description at Amazon.com. I may have to get a copy of that one for my grandsons too!

5.0 out of 5 stars PREMIUM PROMOTIONAL SERVICES BOOK REVIEW:, May 8, 2009
This review is from: Sal and Sally (Paperback)
Sal and Sally are best friends that enjoy playing together and discovering new adventures. One day, the two happy-go-lucky sea bass stumble upon the most amazing pastime...they learn how to blow bubbles! In the ocean they blow big bubbles, little bubbles, and bubbles of many different colors. For hours, just the two of them laugh and swim around all the blown bubbles until Nellie, the octopus, swims over to join in.

Nellie sees how much fun Sal and Sally are having and really wants to join them. But Nellie has a big problem...she doesn't know how to blow bubbles.

Sal and Sally gaily come to Nellie's rescue and are happy to teach her. Nellie proves she is an excellent student when she exhales and blows a huge bubble. A bubble so enormous, it engulfs Sal and Sally inside.

Sal and Sally attempt to pop the bubble, but to no avail. And what's worse--Nasty Nick, the Texas long nose shark, comes by and now they are in real danger. Afraid, Sal and Sally can only watch as he approaches.

Nasty Nick is looking for dinner and can now see his meal trapped inside this bubble. He attempts to pop the bubble with his long nose; but like Sal and Sally's attempt, the bubble just won't burst.

Sal and Sally are safe, but this leaves Nellie outside the bubble and looking scrumptious for Nick's next meal. Will this be Nellie's last frolic with her two new friends or will Nasty Nick have a change of heart and let Nelly go free?

Once again, Jay Miller composes a delightful tale.

In a joyful way of learning, Miller uses rich descriptions, delivering powerful messages of life values and morals--playing and working together in a way that shows even a nasty shark needs friends. In "Sal and Sally," the colorful illustrations compliment the story and are sure to grab the little listeners' attention. With joyful songs at the end of the story, everyone will surely be dancing about the room as they envision many bubbles bouncing and floating around them.

"Sal and Sally" is sure to be a favorite on any child's bookcase. I recommend this book for those children who have lots of energy. Those who love to dance, sing and have fun. And adults who wish to spread positive life values and morals to those little ones they love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teamwork Makes It All Better, February 21, 2009
By
This review is from: Sal and Sally (Paperback)
Sal and Sally are two small fish just hanging out in the waters of the big blue sea. They soon grow bored, though, so, to amuse herself, Sally starts to blow bubbles. Fascinated by the practice, Sal begs Sally to teach him how to do the same, and the two of them then proceed to have a ball, blowing bubbles and swimming around in the sea.

Nellie The Octopus soon arrives, and, upon seeing the fun that Sal and Sally are having, she asks them to teach her how to blow bubbles, too. They happily oblige, and Nellie then proceeds to blow a gigantic bubble - so big, in fact, that it accidentally traps Sal and Sally inside. While they're trying to figure out how to get out of the bubble, Nasty Nick, the Texas Long Nose Cowboy Shark, sidles up to the trio. Initially, he masks his malicious intentions, but once Sal and Sally catch on to the true purpose of his visit, they implore Nellie to join them in the bubble in order to save herself from getting eaten by him. She quickly does, and, despite his best efforts, Nasty Nick is unable to burst the bubble and get to his prey, so he slithers off.

Safe once again, Sal, Sally, and Nellie then figure out a way to get out of the bubble - but, once they're free, Nasty Nick makes a quick return to finish what he started...can the three friends find a way to avoid becoming a tasty snack for a sneaky, hungry shark?

Readers of all ages are sure to enjoy Sal And Sally. In it, author Jay Miller does a commendable job of highlighting the advantages of getting along and working together, outlining just how beneficial the principles of teamwork, sharing, and selflessness are when put into real practice. The collective strength that can be manifested through genuine bonding is a lesson that it's never too late to learn.

Miller also places special emphasis on the importance of changing one's ways in order to gain the trust of others. The power of redemption is a universal theme that never gets old, and, as he depicts in the decisions that Nasty Nick ultimately makes, Miller does an effective job of showing the reader just how advantageous it can be to seek to make amends for past wrongs.

Kudos to Jay Miller for creating an engaging tale, both enlightening and entertaining and sure to become a permanent addition to personal libraries everywhere. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Friendship in the Sea, September 9, 2008
This review is from: Sal and Sally (Paperback)
Sal And Sally was great fun to read, and quite captivating for children to listen to. It is quite repetitive which young children love Even before they can read they will be chanting along with you.

It is a beautiful book...flowing and poetic with lovely humour. Anyone who reads this will be drawn in right from the very first word. It is an engaging children's story with all it's graceful prose, and full bodied characters. I particulay loved the atmospheric setting in the Ocean. This book is uplifting and an enchanting tale that is likely to become a childhood staple. Miller is a mesmerizing storyteller, his book is deeply emotional with wondeful three dimensional characters. Sal and Sally, a couple of Sea Bass are infinitely appealing ... one gets the sense of them having a caring respectful friendship ; which is rich and satisfying. Beyond the familiar elements is the underlying current that they just might be eaten by Nasty Nick the Texas Long Horn Nose Shark. This added dimension elevated the story to more then just a fun children's tale but one with a message. Miller has a talent for navigating children's emotions through Sal and Sally; from the familiar....discovering how to blow bubbles, to the friendship and respect between them, to their fears of being eaten and Nick's anger for not getting what he desired and ultimately to everyone getting along and having fun. A masterful blend of love, and humor, with a little of bit wonder thrown in.

Beautifully written..... highly recommended.... a perfect 10.

At the end of the book are words to a few songs :

The Octopus Song
Nifty Nick's Bubble Blowing Song
The Turtle Song.
