NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, searches the world to work directly with the finest artisan designers. Pre-Hispanic motifs of Aztec inspiration distinguish these stoneware plates, ideal for salads, canapés, or dessert. Guadalupe Servin, a talented designer, combines ancient techniques with innovative motifs in original, functional pieces crafted entirely by hand. The artisans first fire the piece at a low temperature. The resulting "bisque" or "biscuit" is carefully glazed by hand and returns to the kiln at temperatures of up to 2,462º F (1,350º C). Original and versatile, these exclusive stoneware pieces are dishwasher safe and free of lead and toxins. "There are ancestral techniques we strive to reproduce and revive," the artisan and her husband affirm. Because each piece is handcrafted, there may be slight variations in size and weight. However, this only enhances and confirms the originality and authenticity of the pieces.Guadalupe Servin says,
"Finally... victory... And that pride I have of being able to guarantee that there is not one piece that leaves our kilns that is not a vehicle of history, a memento of lost objects, and forgotten techniques...."
