Book Description

Grassina, Emma's wonderful, magical aunt, is herself a teen in this prequel to the Frog Princess books. She and her sister, Chartreuse (Emma's irritating mother from the other books) are vying to see who will get the family's inherited magical skills as they navigate the intricacies of being a princess in a magical kingdom-a bevy of mostly terrible would-be suitors, a father who becomes a ghost, a mother who changes from a stressed, but semi-normal human to a selfish witch, and the arrival of some terrible werewolves. When Grassina finds and falls in love with a wizard-in-training, Haywood, and invokes the wrath of her sister, it is the werewolves, who despite their evil ways, bring about Grassina's change from mortal princess to Green Witch powers. Every bit as funny and satisfying as the other stories!

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too August 22, 2007
No, this is not a story about Princess Emeralda and Prince Eadric.

This new story, which is a prequel to THE TALES OF THE FROG PRINCESS, visits Princess Emeralda's a teenager!

Living in Greater Greensward with her mother, father, and sister, Chartreuse, Grassina is not expected to do much. Chartreuse was first born, which means she will be both Queen and Green Witch. All Grassina is expected to do is to marry a prince.

When the King gives their mother a bouquet of flowers the family curse turns her into a nasty hag and also disperses of her Green Witch title. Now Greater Greensward has no Green Witch to protect them.

While doing a meaningless task for her mother, Grassina hears word of werewolves invading towns and nearing Greater Greensward. With no Green Witch, who will stop them? Its up to magic-less Grassina, runaway Haywood, and a snake named Pippa to save the kingdom.

As a fan of THE TALES OF THE FROG PRINCESS, i thought this was a good prequel. The book reads smoothly and gives Grassina more personality than that which we already knew. If you read the books released before THE SALAMANDER SPELL you know the outcome, but nevertheless it's a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Salamder Spell July 2, 2008
If you have read the other books in E.D. Baker's seires the Frog Princess then you will love this book. It gives you a better discription of what happened durning Grassina's childhood. And if you are just starting this series then you would like to read this book first because it explains a lot of the relationships that are skippped over in the other books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute and clean March 4, 2012

I like all of these books because they are cute clean reads that are appropriate for any age. If you haven't read the other books read this first. It was a little bittersweet at the end because young Grassina was so optimistic about the future, and if you've read the other books first you know how hard her life gets, but Baker makes everything turn out so lovely that it is a worthwhile series to read. Much better than wasting a day in front of t.v.

This series is a great read! My 10 year old daughter has not put my kindle down, as she keeps wanting to read the Frog Princess Tales and asks to read more. She will tell me little bits about the characters and what is happening to them. I LOVE the fact that it makes her want to read more and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really cute story October 20, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The way the story explains what happened to Emma's mom and aunt when they were younger. It was like a flashback to make the rest of the books make more since.

i love all of the emotion E.D. Baker makes the story come to life.

I think this is a great book for anyone who loves fantasy, a little romance, and a lot of action.
