About the Author

Jim Hopkinson is a Marketing Director at Conde Nast Digital, working on the online marketing, analytics, and social media strategy for brands such as Wired. He hosts a popular marketing blog and podcast called The Hopkinson Report, which mixes entertaining coverage of new media marketing trends, interviews with entrepreneurs, and analysis of companies driving the growth of the digital age. His energetic and passionate approach has been called "audible caffeine."
Jim also teaches a class called Social Media: Strategies for Marketing Success at New York University, enjoys serving as a mentor for young business professionals, and was named one of min's "Top 21 Social Media Superstars" in 2009.
An avid sports fan, prior to Conde Nast Jim spent 8 years at ESPN, first as a technical producer in Seattle, followed by online marketing for and Mobile ESPN in New York City. I'm a nervous negotiator (as a lot of young women tend to be). When it came to preparing for interviews, I spent plenty of time doing my homework, tailoring cover letters, and dreaming up innovative ways to present my skills and impress a prospective employer. I figured I'd let my skills and my presentation speak for themselves-- unbeatable when an employer is determining whether you're qualified, but not so clever when you're expected to negotiate a salary. I rarely countered offers and almost always accepted figures I would question for days after the fact (when you're a perfectionist, there's always something you can kick yourself about). Here's why this book makes all the difference:

1. It's a friendly guide with equal parts theory and fact. The personal anecdotes are honest, reassuring, and help humanize the whole process. The theory and techniques are explained step-by-step and account for the fact that most people are squeamish about salary discussions.

2. It's a reminder that salary discussions aren't tacky or scary. Negotiation is both acceptable and expected-- and it can demonstrate a number of other venerable qualities employers value.

3. It presents insights that help put the value of salary negotiation into perspective-- perspective that is impossible to gloss over or forget, no matter how anxious negotiating makes you.

4. This book helped me negotiate the salary I wanted with ease! I used the techniques listed and they were painless. I've recommended it to friends and I'd lend my copy out in a heartbeat.

OK, I confess, I was Jim's neighbor growing up and I am long time friend of his. So why would you listen to me? Well, I'll tell you why. Even before Jim wrote Salary Tutor, he was my go-to person for negotiating salary. He has coached me through many an interview, and many a salary negotiation, and his advise has been truly invaluable. It is so amazing to see him combine all of his tried-and-true techniques in to this concise, easy-to-read guide. It's straight forward and fun (and he writes exactly the same way he talks - with logic, humor, and enthusiasm). No b.s., straight to the point, this is how you get yourself more money. It's plain and simple.

It just so happened that when Jim was putting the finishing touches on this book, I was out of work during the worst down-turn in the economy since the Great Depression. Jobless, my confidence was at an all-time low, with a house payments looming, and a baby on the way. I was feeling very worried about finding another job - nevermind negotiating for a higher salary! He sent me a copy of his book, and asked that I take a look to see what I thought. Jim's words wer like a splash of cold water on my face, like a coach telling you to get back in the game and go for it.

What Jim teaches you most is what do you have to lose? And if you don't go for it, A. you ARE NOT going to get anymore money (that's for sure), and B. you ARE going to kick yourself for not at least sticking up for yourself and telling that potential employer what you're worth! So two awesome green sector jobs later since I was out of work, I have negotiated my way up to - no lie - a 35% increase in salary from where I was 1 year ago!! I am so thankful to have grown up next to this guy!!

Negotiation is not taught in school as Jim Hopkinson mentions in his book. It is also not often mentioned or passed on through your peers. I didn't even know it was an option until I had been working for a bit. Negotiating seemed like you were asking for too much and should be happy enough to just get the position. Maybe this is a gender difference. Slowly over the years I have improved and changed my perspective about negotiating. Recently I had an opportunity to make a job change and I wanted to make sure I was prepared. Jim's book is an excellent and plain spoken guide with fun personal anecdotes to prepare for salary negotiations. It provided the steps necessary to be as informed and prepared as possible and how to deal with the often premature but persistent "how much are you currently making" question. I also appreciated the salary and additional asks being seen separately. Negotiating salary is one part of the process and negotiating tuition reimbursement, vacation, flex schedule and conferences can be just as important but second part.

I felt confident and prepared after reading the book. I was able to negotiate and receive 95% of what I wanted for the new position. I highly recommend the book. Thanks Jim!

I met Jim at SXSW this year and he mentioned that his book was coming out soon. I'm a freelancer and I knew I would soon be negotiating a new rate with one of my clients, so I asked him if he had any tips. We talked for a bit and he gave me some advice for freelancers that he mentioned would be included in the paperback version in a few months. I ended up grabbed the ebook as soon as it was available anyway, and it had plenty of useful information on negotiation techniques which can apply to both full-time workers and freelancers. Reading this book and hearing what Jim had to say specific to freelancers gave me confidence to ask for what I felt I was worth. And you know what, it worked! I got a $20 an hour bump in my rate.
