5.0 out of 5 stars Salas: Un Barroco Cubano Del Siglo, XVIII, December 10, 2006
This review is from: Salas: Un Barroco Cubano Del Siglo XVIII (Cuban Baroque Music of the 18th Century) (Audio CD)
If I have to name a favorite genre of classical music, it would have to be Baroque. I listen to it every day. Until a few weeks ago, though, I had never heard of Esteban Salas! I had no idea that Cuba produced a composer of this magnitude! He is so refreshing, truly a joy to the ears. I look forward to exploring all the works of this great master.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Master in any age, February 5, 2010
This review is from: Salas: Un Barroco Cubano Del Siglo XVIII (Cuban Baroque Music of the 18th Century) (Audio CD)
Esteban Salas is one of the great overlooked baroque composers, possibly because he lived and worked in Cuba. I never would have guessed that such beautiful baroque music came from there had I not had the luck to discover this CD. The recording and performances, especially the singers, do great justice to the material. But the obscurity of this master is even more distressing when you learn of his lifetime of struggle to bring his music to the world in the face of crippling indifference. The political rulers and the church who should have been supporting him drove him instead to the poorhouse. He died penniless and in despair, but his music will live on, bringing joy to those lucky enough to encounter it.
