The span of more than 300 years clouds much about Salem's witchcraft tragedy in mystery, from its actual cause, which has been widely speculated upon and written about, to all manner of miniutiae. For example, the precice location of Gallows Hill, generally accepted as the place of execution, is a matter of conjecture.
One of the more interesting puzzles about what happen in Salem in 1692 concerns the fate of the remains of the nineteen people, fourteen women and five men, who were hanged for witchcraft.Family tradition has it that Rebecca Nurse's sons recovered her body after her execution and buried her on her property.A skeleton believed to be that of George Jacobs was unearthed on his farmstead many years after his execution and reburied with an appropriate ceremony at the Rebecca Nurse Homestead in 1992.
The whereabouts of the remaining seventeen victims is unknown. That mystery is the focus of this story.SALEM'S SECRET is a work of fiction with threads of historical fact running through it.

This review is from: Salem's Secret: Fiction Based on Fact (Helen Highwaters) (Paperback)
The premise sounded promising when I ordered this book, but sad to say, it has turned out to be an amateurish production about 17 ancient skeletons discovered in a church in modern-day Salem, MA. Whom might they be? The protagonist, Helen Waters, is the only female fisherman (sic) in the neighboring town. Her grandmother would very much like to link her up with a nice professional gentleman, so Helen can leave the sea and become a genteel history teacher. A love potion procured from a local wiccan practitioner seems to do the trick. But someone is targeting local witches and committing violence against them. Maybe the state archaeologist can help Helen get to the bottom of this crime wave and figure out whose skeletons those are.
