4.0 out of 5 stars Considering Sales? "Know Thyself" and the Intricacies of Sales., January 28, 2007
This review is from: Sales Careers: The Ultimate Guide to Getting a High-Paying Sales Job (Paperback)
Author Ted Newill has worked for me twice over the span of 27 years so I have a definite bias in writing this review.

Ted was a Territory Manager, field sales rep, when I became President of American Hospital Supply's (AHSC)Heyer-Schulte Division. He eventually became the company's (under the Mentor, Inc. name) National Sales Director and Vice-President, Sales. Well after I left AHSC, I lured him away to become my Vice-President, Marketing and Sales, for KeraVision, Inc.

Ted was an outstanding sales representative and sales executive. He built a great sales organization while at Mentor and was an excellent developer of sales people and sales executives. He also, despite the numerous obstacles a start-up faces, did the same while at KeraVision.

His book, "Sales Careers," reflects his insight, wisdom, and experience in "the field" and managing those who are "in the field." This is not an academic work but a real "how-to" book. It will be extremely useful for those seeking sales positions, regardless of industry.

Ted has organized "Sales Careers" around:
1. Defining Sales
2. What's Great and What's Tough About a Sales Job
3. A Week in the Life of a Sales Professional
4. What Does a Sales Job Pay?
5. The Art and Science of Sales: Understanding and Assessing Your Fit(ness) for the Field
6. Why Women Rule in Sales
7. Strategies for Breaking Into Sales
8. Sales Career Paths
9. Resources for Your Sales Job Search and Career.

One of the most important aspects of this book is the introspective analysis of what it takes to make it in sales (Chapters 2 & 5). I have met many people who "feel" they can sell, jump into a sales position, and then, experience catastrophic failure. "Know Thy Self" is as important to sales as it is for any other aspect of life.

"Sales Careers" is useful in probing the potential "fit" for anyone wanting to investigate their potential in sales.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guide for getting a Sales job, June 17, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sales Careers: The Ultimate Guide to Getting a High-Paying Sales Job (Paperback)
Experienced or new to Sales this is a great guide for you. The chapters cover everything in a clear and consise manner. This book helped me to 'revive' my resume and include skills or achievements I had either not included or not worded in the most impactful way to get hired! There is a good overview of all possible sales jobs from an avon representative to selling high end capital equipment. For less than $20.00 this is the only book you need to land a great job.

This review is from: Sales Careers: The Ultimate Guide to Getting a High-Paying Sales Job (Paperback)
Sales Careers: The Ultimate Guide to Getting a High Paying Sales Job is one of the best "how to" sales profession books I've ever read! Being in the sales profession for over 15 yrs! I cannot believe the new "inside info" I gained to help me hire and retain exceptional sales professionals!

It introduces practical applications, especially for those thinking about entering the sales profession. It demonstrates KEY sales techniques to getting high paying positions and opportunities. It contains TRUE sales case studies, so you know what you are getting into when deciding on a sales career. It shows you WHAT to contain in your resume! It contains other sales information resources, so that you as potential sales professionals can make an educated career decision. It is absolutely one of the best tools I've ever seen!

5.0 out of 5 stars An "A" book for an "A" sales person, August 26, 2003

This review is from: Sales Careers: The Ultimate Guide to Getting a High-Paying Sales Job (Paperback)
I am the owner of a recruiting firm and place a lot of "A" talent in medical device and consumer firms. Our firm tries to read all of the latest books and recommend them to our candidates. The book "Sales Careers the Ultimate Guide to Getting a High-Paying Sales Job" is a MUST READ for any serious
candidate wanting to break into the next level of sales. Mr. Newill has done a superb job of guiding the serious candidate into analyzing their skills to maximize their success. Additionally, he answers all of the questions that people have on salary, commissions, and the best compensation
programs. I hope that Mr. Newill writes a book on how to get ahead in management to supplement this fantastic "must read".

4.0 out of 5 stars The previous reviews are sketchy., April 6, 2004
This review is from: Sales Careers: The Ultimate Guide to Getting a High-Paying Sales Job (Paperback)
I bought this book at a retail outlet and then decided to check the amazon.com website reviews and price. There are only three previous reviews for the book. The reviews all originate in Florida. The reviews all use similar BOLD text to emphasize key selling points for the book. The reviews all have similar cut-n-paste type errors. The reviews all have 5 stars.

I often wonder about the legitimacy of reviews. I find it hard to believe that the previous reviews didn't have the same point of origination.

The book itself may be just the type of companion book needed in your job hunt arsenal, easy to read and apply.
