Not very useful,
By Domo Kun (over here) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sales and Leases: Examples and Explanations (Examples & Explanations) (Paperback)
I'm not interested in reading this book from cover to cover, but there isn't any other way to get information out of it.
1 - The table of contents doesn't list the chapter subsections, making it hard to figure out what chapter contains the information I want. 2 - No table of cases! Every law reference book should have one - there's no excuse for it being missing. 3 - Pathetic index - only 2 pages long. I almost never found what I was looking for. If you are interested in reading the entire book front to back, it might be useful. If you want to read a bit at a time to supplement your casebook as you go through the semester, you will be frustrated.

thankgoodness!,
This review is from: Sales and Leases: Examples and Explanations (Examples & Explanations) (Paperback)
Looking up the statutes was helpful & it is important to read through the explanations of all the answers to understand a particular statute or statutes. I found the analysis in the hypotheticals very helpful since his answers are exactly how our professor wanted them to be - "open ended". And yes, I did well!

Below Standard,

I love the Examples and Explanations series. The book on Civ Pro was perfect. The Contracts book was very good. This book disappoints because it doesn't provide explanations.
This edition refers students in almost every paragraph to look up a portion of the UCC or refer to a statute or case. Instead of explaining Sales and Leases, this editions tells us on every page to look at a provision of the UCC and discover the truth for ourselves. It might be fine as a supplement to online law school, but given the huge amounts of text law students have to read, it is almost useless as a concise explanation of the subject.

This book saved me in my Sales class and helped me grasp the UCC. I had no idea what was going on until I cracked this book the weekend before the midterm. I took this class as a first semester 1L with most students as 3L's who had taken Commercial Paper. I got the second highest grade in the class! Most of the analysis is based on unamended Art. 2, so if your professor teaches on Revised Art. 2, then you'll need another supplement.

First-rate, down-to-earth exposition,

I am baffled at the negative reviews. Maybe those reviewers were trying to get a quick fix the night before the final. Anyone who disparages the book because it requires them to look up the statute, or because the author has neglected to key it to their particular casebook, is too pampered to be in law school, or to be a lawyer.
A diligent student who uses this book through the course will find it clear, concrete, and immensely useful.

With a few weeks left to go before finals, I relied almost solely on this book to prepare me for the UCC half of my UCC/CISG International Sales course. I worked through each chapter, answered the questions, and basically created an outline from the text and model answers. The exam wound up being almost all UCC Article 2. I got an A. And I'm not really an A student. Buy it!!

It's okay but frustrating at times,
This review is from: Sales and Leases: Examples and Explanations (Examples & Explanations) (Paperback)
This E&E provides good, clear discussions of UCC Article 2 provisions. It would be a five-star product if it wern't for one fundamental problem:
The answers are long, rambly, and not very straightforward. Most of the examples call for short answers, usually a "yes" or a "no." For an explanation, you get about a page-and-a-half of reasoning and NO CLEAR ANSWER so you have no idea if you're right or wrong. That defeats the purpose of getting an E&E in the first place. However, the discussions that precede the questions are quite clear and useful, and that's what saves this book from getting only two stars. I see there is a new version coming out in March 2009. I hope that this will be improved in the new version.

I really like the examples and explanations series and the Sales and Leases book is no exception. Those looking for quick reference will certainly be better served by a number of more concise books in outline form but if you want a workbook style book that really makes you grapple with the contents of the UCC and figure out how to apply the law then this is for you (doesn't sound like something anyone in their right mind would want to do, but for law school exams its great). James Brook has a very engaging writing style which makes a dry subject much more palatable than many of the other outlines I've seen.

Not Great,
By Legal Eagle "Legal Eagle" (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews

This is a really poor E and E. I find most of E and Es really helpful, but I'm no better off owning this one than I was without it. The brief explanations of the topics at the beginning of each chapter do not suffice. Furthermore the questions are fairly straightforward and extremely leading, but this can be a problem with most E and E's. If you are buying this just to get the hypos then by all means go right ahead, but do not think that you are going to learn sales from reading this book. You'd be better served spending your time on your Course Outline.

Abolutely outstanding examples. Clear and concise writing from one of the foremost experts on the topic makes this class a breeze.
