Charming love story.,

Charming film about a young couple just starting out. The young woman comes from a wealthy family, but keeps her wealth a secret from her new husband. Her husband tends to buy too much on credit and struggles to make ends meet. Likeable characters hold your interest in this simple love story. Filmed in 1938.

Typical Matinee Fare,
By Theoni Lussos "Kandy" (Fitchburg, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saleslady (Amazon Instant Video)
The characters here aren't particularly likable; the heiress masquerading as a "regular" gal lies too much to her beau to entice him into marriage. Her beau is too hardheaded and unsympathetic in his high spending ways to see the appeal. The grandfather alone, old hand Harry Davenport, has some integrity here and strong likability -- you're rather charmed by him but the other characters fall flat. He alone manages to put some life into this script; the others seem to be asleep at the wheel. The Horatio Alger theme may be enticing as is the strong family values, but its hard to reconcile with the husband, Weldon Heyburn's, profligate ways.
