5.0 out of 5 stars Sad But Fascinating, November 6, 2000

This review is from: The Salford Pals: The History of the Salford Brigade, the 15th, 16th, 19th and 20th (Service Battalions the Lancashire Fusiliers, 1914-1919) (Hardcover)
This book is one of a series from the publisher covering the "pals" battalions in the British Army 1914-1918. These were locally raised groups of men of all ages and social standing from close neighborhoods, who volunteered to fight early (1914-1915) in Britain's huge war effort. The "pals" battalions suffered terribly in the war, and due to the local grouping of the casualties, the effects were long felt in the cities and towns from whence the "pals" had come. Filled with very good photographs of the men and the places they fought, and with personal anecdotes, the book is a focused, narrow view into the Great War that transcends the big picture and drives home the human costs. Sad, yes; inspiring too. A "must read" for anyone interested in regimental histories of the British Army, or the smaller stories of the infantryman in the Great War.
