5.0 out of 5 stars Soulful voices and guitar, December 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Salipo (Audio CD)
Though they are only two, they make music that can certainly move thousands. Soulful, sad, rhythmic and hypnotic Angolan folk music at its very best. The Kafala Brothers simply employ guitar, flute and intuitive vocal harmonizing to convey their conflicted message of love, sadness and hope for their beloved country. "Benguela" is one of my favorites (I lived there and the Portuguese lyrics strike up visual imagery that forces me to sweetly reminisce). If you like soulful guitar and beautiful harmonies, then you will love this CD. Many of my American friends have been turned on to African music as a result of this CD. It also has funtioned well to tell a story of Angola by way of music alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, timeless, Music, March 22, 2007

This review is from: Salipo (Audio CD)
I found out about the Kafala Brothers on a compilation called "African Troubadors" and had to get their CD. There music is about war, povery, struggle, pain, joy. You can really hear it without knowing the lyrics.

They sing in Angolan languages as well as Portugeuse (the colonial power in Angola at the time)On some songs you can really hear the portuguese/latin influence in the guitar and singing techniques.

Someone at another site characterized them as a bit like Simon and Garfunkel and I'd say thats a fairly good comparison. Very emotional music, great harmonies and melodies. Very unique stuff.
