Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-2-- Sally Ann, a bossy rag doll, persuades her owner, Lucy, to take her on a picnic with the rest of the nursery school. While at Riverside Park, Lucy sneaks off for an unexpectedly dangerous ride on the river and needs to be rescued. This, the third of the "Sally Ann" books, underscores the importance of consistency in characterization, plot, and illustration. Numerous flaws will irritate observant readers and weaken the story's credibility. Overall, Dicks effectively builds tension in the plot, which moves along nicely. However, the dramatic final scene on the river loses some of its power because the nature of the danger is unclear. Large print and abundant illustrations enhance the book's physical look, but the black-and-white sketches do not reflect the text. Lucy speaks like a toddler but looks like a five-year-old. Finally, the use of the word "mystery" in the title is misleading. While talking-doll stories hold enormous appeal for those just beginning chapter books, and few good ones are available, this one does not increase their number. --Maggie McEwen, Coffin Elementary School, Brunswick, ME
