Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-- Sally Ann, a precocious rag doll whose motto is `` `There's always a way if you try!,'' first appeared in Sally Ann on Her Own (S. & S., 1992). Now she rescues the kindly, but none too clever, Mrs. Foster when a financial crisis strikes the day care center where they both live. It needs extensive electrical work, but Mrs. Foster lacks the money to pay for it. Sally Ann advises her on fund-raising; oddly enough, Mrs. Foster isn't fazed by a talking doll (readers are told that she is too scatterbrained to really notice). This is a little hard to believe; however, the woman is astute enough not to reveal the brains behind the fund-raising projects. In a mere five days, a fair, a play, a rummage sale, and a raffle are arranged, all to be held at the same time. When the top three events are cancelled, Sally Ann's toy friends perform. Appealing black-and-white illustrations portraying both human and nonhuman characters appear on every spread. Perhaps the money problems are resolved a little too quickly and neatly, yet Sally Ann's ``can do'' attitude is admirable. Other good choices about toys that come to life include Polacco's Babushka's Doll (S. & S., 1990) and any of Hissey's Little Bear stories (Putnam). --Laura Culberg, Harold Washington Library Center, Chicago
