About the Director

Global Science Productions was formed in 1990 by Dr. Elliott H. Haimoff. Dr. Haimoff is a world-renowned tropical biologist and animal behaviorist, who pioneered the use of videotaping and video production in the analysis of animal behavior back in 1976. Dr. Haimoff received his Ph.D. in Biology from Cambridge University, and went on to become a research professor in Biology at U.C.L.A., continuing his pioneering research in both video production and developing computer programs for biological analyses. Dr. Haimoff s work on animal behavior became the subject of a P.B.S. science television program in mid-1988. In addition, Dr. Haimoff served as the host and narrator for a one-hour program on understanding feline behavior, as well as appearing in several science news segments. Dr. Haimoff's TV production work began in late-1988, when he joined the science unit of the Los Angeles P.B.S. station, KCET, where he and his colleagues produced literally dozens of science programs examining everything from why cats purr to the science of sports medicine; from the last picture show of the Voyager space craft, to the science of art; from ancient Chinese astronomy to the latest in laser surgery; and from the physiology of obesity, exercise, metabolism and weight loss, to future colonization on Mars. After forming GLOBAL SCIENCE PRODUCTIONS in 1990, Dr. Haimoff and his staff have produced over 200 documentaries that spanned the spectrum of science, from the beginnings of the universe at the Big Bang, to profiles of the U.S. and Russian space programs in the old halcyon days of the space race to the moon, and even to what humankind might look like in the next million years. Some of the recent documentary programs produced by Global Science Productions have examined the most highly controversial current issues facing humanity today such as the moral, ethical, scientific, and religious implications related to human cloning, genetic modification of food, and animal transgeni

Product Description

This one hour documentary profiles the life and experiences of Dr. Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space aboard the Space Shuttle STS-7 in June 1983. We take a look at Dr. Ride s arduous and difficult training for over six years before her first flight. We explore her thoughts and feelings during the two missions she flew before retiring form NASA and her views on the future of women in the space program. Dr. Ride was extensively interviewed in her office at the University of California at San Diego, along with several of her colleagues in the space program, NASA officials in charge of hiring her and many others who helped shape her life and career. Footage and photographs never before seen of Dr. Ride in her early years and experiences in the space program are also included. Thanks in large part to the dedication and sacrifices of Dr. Sally Ride both men and women will be working side by side in the exploration of our solar system and beyond. It was the pioneering work of Dr. Ride that serves as a model for women of all ages that the sky s the limit to achieving their dreams in their own professions.
