Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Sally gets out of bed late one morning--only to stumble over various and sundry toys on the floor--and leaves for school in a bad mood. Objects in the room, such as a lampshade festooned with dirty socks and a bed full of toys and puzzle pieces, begin to express their dismay and disgust with their treatment. They decide to take action, and readers see chair, table, bed, and bureau marching down Main Street, heading toward the school. Needless to say, Sally is surprised when her furniture bursts into the classroom. She rushes home, is impressed by the space in her room, and cleans it up. Bright watercolor washes fill in the areas created by India-ink line drawings. Brown's illustrations reflect a slapdash cartoon style with frequent use of overexaggerated facial expressions. A kind of goofy humor prevails. While the pages seem cluttered and somewhat frenetic, there is also a sense of energy. Text is interspersed with the drawings and is sometimes difficult to read. Dialogue is flippant, with occasional exclamations of ``ick'' and ``yuck.'' A mildly humorous but predictable story. --Alexandra Marris, Rochester Public Library, NY

From Kirkus Reviews

When Sally leaves for school, her room is such a mess that it has actually inconvenienced her. The room doesn't like it either: Not only do Sally's belongings begin to lecture (``Ick,'' says a dirty fishbowl, while the clock with no batteries tells the globe it's got socks on its head), but the entire room follows her to school. Confronted, the embarrassed Sally rushes home, arrives ahead of her stuff, is pleasantly surprised with the useful space that greets her, and promptly reforms. The message here is rendered almost painless by the novel idea, the funny pronouncements of the furniture, and the comical details in the cartoon-style illustrations. 5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book as a kid!, November 22, 2002
This review is from: Sally's Room (Hardcover)
This was one of my favorite books when I was younger. I really loved how the furniture in the room came alive and wanted to be clean. I had the book on tape to listen to as I followed along, and I listened to it all the time. Maybe that's why I always try to keep my room as clean as I can! I highly suggest this book for any parent to get for their child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!, April 19, 2010
This review is from: Sally's Room (Paperback)
I loved this book as a kid. The illustrations today are as great and relevant as when I was 6 years old and my mom read it to me to encourage me to clean my room. I actually just gave away my copy to my 5 and 6 year old adopted bro-in-laws, who were severely abused as children, and suffer from reactive attachment disorder. I know this book probably wont be surviving them, so I intend to buy myself another copy at some point. I only hope it helps them grow up organized 1/2 as well as it worked for me.

When I was a child, I read this book so many times that my copy's pages are falling out, the binding is coming apart, and the pages are faded and wrinkled. I especially love how Sally dances because I loved to dance and every little girl loves to dance!
