This review is from: Salmon Fishing (Paperback)
This is far more than a how-to-fish guide. It is that, in the extreme practical detail that only a fisherman with decades of thoughtful experience could provide. Yet this book is also an excellent natural history of the Atlantic salmon's life and habits. Mr. Falkus has spent a lifetime not only fishing, but observing the behavior of the fish, and he has become a much better fisherman for it. As a naturalist writer, Falkus's prose shares the wit and cadence of David Attenborough; this book is simply an excellent and entertaining read. A short chapter on the more spiritual side of the sport of fishing truly gave me pause. A similar highlight is his discussion of the premonitory "feeling"-- gained through experience-- that occurs just before the fish will bite. This book is an in-depth field guide, an exhaustive textbook, and a sound piece of literature.
