light hiker...more like trail shoe, October 11, 2010
This review is from: Salomon Men's 3D Fastpacker Mid GTX Hiking Boot (Apparel)
I have great respect for Salomon boots. My first pair of heavy duty Gortex Salomon's lasted 9 years...fantastic. Never had a blister and great support and stability! Used the boots on 8-10 mile dayhikes and backpacking small sections(25miles)of AT in GSMNP with my son. Purchased the 3-D Fastpacker for Father's Day to replace the well worn Salomons.
Super light weight, couldn't believe how light, since my New Balance running shoes weigh more. Tried the boots on two day hikes (should have quit at one). I am big guy at 2301bs, so for me...the 3D Fastpacker just flexed and twisted over every root (and acorn) in the trail and I was only carrying a daypack. To be fair, if you were lighter framed guy...say 180 pounds, they may have enough support. I also need "stability" and these boots allowed my foot to roll inward (under-pronate), causing lateral knee pain. Bottom line, they are super light, but there isn't enough support to really call it a "hiking boot".

Comfortable Boot But Not Waterproof, August 18, 2011
This review is from: Salomon Men's 3D Fastpacker Mid GTX Hiking Boot (Apparel)
If you want comfort, this is a great boot. At best, this boot is water resistant. After being out in the rain for 2 hours, my feet were soaked. I do not recommend this boot for wet weather.

Light boot suitable for tracks and stairs, April 19, 2011
This review is from: Salomon Men's 3D Fastpacker Mid GTX Hiking Boot (Apparel)
Boots arrived excatly on date advised (Sydney, Australia). Bought size 12.5 as my usual size of 12 didn't quite fit (due to rigid toe cap). Salomon don't bring half sizes into Oz over 12. Have taken these boots on 2 walks so far. Sydney walkers would know descent at Wentworth Falls to Vera Falls and Hippocrene. These boots provided suitable downhill support without smashing your toes to front of boot. Boot is very flexible and provides good movement for heading back up the ascent.
Two things: 1. The boot is not water proof. Dipped foot in water to first lace loop for 10 seconds. Minor leaking in both boots at toe. 2. Lacing took a while to work out. Boot could do with a lace lock in the configuration. Remedied this by putting a tie prior to lacing through the last loop. This locks the heel in.
This boot opened with a retail price of AUD$320 in local stores so the value at US$110 cannot be argued with. I think this is a great boot for day walks where flexibility is an absolute must (which means most local day walks in my area). Plus the boot looks good and is not something your old dad would wear.
