There is a slight menthol smell, but I don't mind it.
M Roger
They adhere quite strongly, and are like any adhesive applied to the skin--it can smart a bit when you take it off!
Deborah Crawford
They really work well, better than any other patch, pain cream, or spray.

I have a lot to say about these, so please bear with me. I had pulled a back muscle in December, and had had little success in getting the pain to go away. I tried the usual suspects - the family of NSAIDS, heating pads, bengay, biofreeze, but nothing really did anything. It felt nice to have Hubby rub goo on my back, but it only lasted a short while.

I was so stiff and sore I could barely bend. Everyday tasks were a joke - I had to use my grabber to get anything off the floor. When I would lay down at night to go to bed, I would get sharp cramps like a "charlie horse" in my back, which were so painful I'd be in tears. I was ready to just give up ever feeling like I could bend again.

I did a little whining online to my friends about my sore back. One of them said she had found one product that actually had worked for her - Salonpas. I had never heard of it, and sent Hubby on a scouting mission. He found the large pads at another drug chain store, and bought a pack for me. I had my first night without the severe muscle cramps in several months! I was ecstatic! (See? Sometimes it pays off to "vent" to your friends!)However, those pads were very large, and pretty expensive, with only five pads being in the box.

So, I did what I always do - researched the items online. I found some great prices right here on Amazon.
I bought this size and a larger one. These smaller pads smelled very differently from the large ones at the drug chain, so I was a little suspicious - were they the same thing? These smelled of a blend of menthol and wintergreen. It isn't offensive, and certainly not nearly as overwhelming as things like Bengay.

I can say that I don't think I could go without these things any longer. Yes, they make that much of a difference.

I had neckpain and did not want to take medication while breastfeeling, so a friend recommended these. I found them at Walgreen's, there are two varieties, the larger patch did not have the same ingredients as these (smaller patches) so I want with the smaller ones, as they were the ones recommended to me. Right out of the box the patch smells very strong, it is a menthol/eucalyptus kind of smell, not bad, but very strong.... so I put it on, about 2 minutes later it started burning. It burns pretty badly, I left it on to give it a full try, it burned for about 2 hours, I am not sure if it really helped with the pain, or if the burning simply distracted me from my pain, but either way it did help a little..... The burning and strong smell were gone after about 2 hours, and I left it on another 4, it seemed to help a little, not as much as a painkiller would have though..... better than nothing I suppose, but I am not sure if it was supposed to burn like that... $10 price for 120 is very good. Walgreen's sells them $5 for 40.

It seemed a little weird.. Salonpas. Ive heard about it all over - friends, internet ads, Shaq even promoted it unofficially. Is it a gimic or does it work?

Well - $11.xx for a box of 120 - why not.

The strips are two per green plastic divider. Each is 3'' x 1 1/2 ''? It smells like bengay and sticky like patches i get from my back doctor. (Backsurgery at L5s1 and it causes pain all over).

So i was reframing my door and had some issues. These arrived just in time and i slapped 4 on. It doesnt say on the box how many to use at once but website says '2 per spot, 4 at a time'. Ok no problem. I got 4 on areas of my back that were outta control and after about 40 minutes it actually helped.

First a cool wave, than warm, and than eventually the muscle stopped spazzing and the other pains melted away. I like it because the 'icy hot/ben gay' smell isnt NEARLY as strong as putting on the cream. Its also not nearly as messy like the creams or other stuff.

Only downside is if you put these on and go to work and sweat - they will come off after a while.

Its hard to tel how long the menthol and camphor feeling (the warm and cool feeling) lasted for.

Over all - 120 patches.. id say a good deal.

Another reviewer was saying something about a different color box and being better.
I went to the website and this is it:
Camphor 1.2%.....Topical Analgesic
Menthol 5.7%.....Topical Analgesic
Methyl Salicylate 6.3%.....Topical Analges

The blue box version he talked about:
Menthol 3%.....Topical analgesic
Methyl salicylate 10% (NSAID*).....Topical analgesic
*nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug

The Methly Salicylate is what is in aspercreme.

I've been using Salonpas-hot and Salonpas patches for years. The green wrapped ones are menthol type, similar to Icy-Hot. The -HOT version is Capsicum. These are great for larger areas and stay on for a long time. Be patient with the Capsicum ones, they take an hour or more before you start to feel them, but they are really effective for overriding the pain sensation and helping you to function with back pain without taking a lot of oral pain meds. I sometimes cut them down for smaller areas, but they stay on best on flatter areas such as shoulder or back. I do not recommend that you the capsicum ones while sleeping as the pressure of your body on the patch makes it feel hotter. The green boxed ones are also very good, have very little smell, and are very inexpensive. None of the medication comes off on your clothes, and the menthol smell is minimal.

Read up on the potential effects on your liver if you take too much oral pain medication. This is a way to reduce that usage, and it really helps to reduce pain.
