Editorial Reviews

Two years after THE WALK OF THE GIANT TURTLE, a whirlwind of progressive electro-rock, Erik Truffaz is back with a brand new album that brings together the many elements of his previous work. As well as the LadyLand Quartet - Michel Benita (bass), Manu Codja (guitar) and Philippe Garcia (drums) - Truffaz is joined by Mounir Troudi and Nya. Both have previously collaborated with Truffaz on two parallel projects, the Ladyland acoustic quartet and the more dominant electronic collective, featuring Marcelo Giuliani, Marc Erbetta and Patrick Muller. One of the album's finest tracks, Yabous, features Mounir Troudi and Nya, singing about the absurdity of war, one in Arabic, the other in English. This latest album from trumpeter Erik Truffaz, who is already working on a myriad of new projects, represents the culmination of a career in music, blending urban rhythms with world music, the acoustic with the electric, and the spontaneity of improvisation with the intricacy of structured compositions. EMI. 2005. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finesse on trumpet, January 16, 2007
By
Swing King (Cincinnati, OH USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saloua (Audio CD)
Erik Truffaz is an impressive French trumpeter at the cutting edge of introducing new styles and beats to a suave jazzy sound. The musicians on this album are:

Erik Truffaz (trumpet, electronics, melodica)
Michael Benita (bass, samples)
Philippe Pipon Garcia (drums, samples, speakerphone)
Manu Codjia (guitars, electronics)
Mounir Troudi (vocals, bendir on tracks 1, 4, 5, 7)
Nya (vocals on tracks 2, 4)

Truffaz has an interesting sound on trumpet that subtly whines with a rich sadness on these tracks. Mounir Troudi adds some world music flavor to the album with his Middle Eastern singing on the tracks I mentioned above. I know nothing of Nya apart from seeing his picture inside the compact disc booklet and his one name pseudonym. The singing is sometimes beautiful, though occasionally distracting. The vocals left me wanting Truffaz to step center stage more often than he did on this effort. Truffazs' talents are apparent most on the tracks not focused on the vocal mission of the album. I felt most satisfied while listening to this album on tracks with the most relaxed feel, such as: 3. "Whispering", 10. "Le Soliel D'eline". You feel a little tributary work might be getting paid to Miles Davis by Truffaz on tracks like: 8. "Tantrik", 11. "Spirale".

This album scores high in my book for originality and moments of beauty, but receives four stars for the vocal arrangements. I think Erik can do some amazing things and is willing to experiment down new avenues for exploration. This album I believe will be come to seen as a stepping stone in his evolving genius as his history unravels. This album is worth owning certainly, though I anticipate future Truffaz releases to overshadow this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars save the voices..., October 17, 2009

great music overall. the vocals were a bit much and overpowering. sometimes less is more and limiting the vocal tracks to one or two would have been enough. perhaps offering the vocal tracks as a bonus feature with instrumental versions would be a better option. should truffaz continue with the vocals in his music this will be a fan looking elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars good stuff, September 19, 2005

Competent and current --a nice postmod hybrid. Urban and well informed. Non-self-indulgent. I likes it.
