Editorial Reviews

Salt For Salt is the first album by BROWN BIRD to capture the intense energy of the duo's live show, surging in waves that often swell into high-spirited, foot-stomping madness. DAVID LAMB's lyrics are as well-written as they are emotionally intelligent, thankfully avoiding the pitfalls of the wish-wash known as "modern-folk" or "singer-songwriting". Lamb and his partner MORGANEVE SWAIN write simply, and the record is eerily sparse at times-a tambourine, a bass drum and the cello often the sole accompaniement to Lamb's cracked, wood-smoke voice. Brown Bird are also not afraid to write experimentally- "Ebb and Flow" and "Shiloh" (the latter a longer, entirely instrumental track) each boast melodies worthy of a dervish, the melodic structure reminiscent more of Turkish or Greek rebetika than old-time or bluegrass. Lamb's continual reference to ships clearly come from his years spent working at the shipyard in Warren, RI, just as their arrangements well only from a deep knowledge of the American folk tradition. A cantankerous and drafty two-man ship stationed in Providence, RI, Brown Bird plays original, traditional American music in the best sense possible. It is music that comes from a context but is not afraid of the context: a living root with a view towards the leaves.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Sonic Treat March 5, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
The best way to appreciate Salt for Salt is to see the current incarnation of Brown Bird as the sonic inverse of The Civil Wars. Whereas the duo of Joy Williams and John Paul White feature plaintive ghostly moaning and intricate vocal harmonies the duo of David Lamb and MorganEve Swain deemphasize the vocals and highlight their multi-instrumentalist abilities. The results is that while the vocals of Barton Hallow take you by the hand, leading you into the intimate world of the love lorn and emotionally conflicted the instruments of Salt for Salt grab you by the coat lapels and drag you screaming and kicking into a pounding, pulsating, heaving world of eschatological gloom.

Artistically Salt for Salt is on par with the Grammy winning Barton Hallow, even if the talents of the performers run in a different musical direction. What this album lacks is the steadying hand of a producer like Charlie Peacock. The genius at work sometimes trips over itself. For example, while the opening stanzas of 'Cast No Shadow' shows Brown Bird at its steaming, griping best the artists introduce an instrumental interlude that does a fine job of illustrating Swain's considerable fiddling skills yet entirely ruins the groove, being about 20 seconds too long. Then there is the haunting 'Ebb and Flow' which regrettably emphasizes the 'light' in highlight clocking in at slightly over two minutes when the slow Native American rhythm would have benefited from a much longer treatment. As for the vocals, the harmonies sometimes work ('End of Days', 'Ebb and Flow') and sometimes not ('Blood of Angels').

Yet it's a testament to the creativity and craftsmanship inherent in the compositions and execution of Salt for Salt that I'm only dinging them one star.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Unique! October 18, 2011

I first heard brown bird this summer thanks to NPR's coverage of the 2011 Newport Folk Festival and have been waiting for the release of Salt for Salt ever since and finally today, it's mine!

What this duo does so well is create such a unique blend of sound that when you hear them, there is no doubt that you are listening to brown bird. Fusing elements of sound from east and west and then icing that with some dark subject matter and lyrics, these two create a sound that is unlike any other.

Just listen for yourself and see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing record! November 29, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
One of the best records of 2011. This duo has a haunting, dark, and earthy sound that grabbed me on first listen and has held up well since then. This is a live recording and has a low-fi vibe reminiscent of old-school folk and punk records. I love how they can rock things out so hard with such sparse instrumentation. Personal favorite tracks are the haunting, spacey ballad 'Ebb and Flow' and the goth-rocker 'Bilgewater'. Refreshingly creative and original and sincere!

The high rating is for the music. I love the CD. I ordered from Amazon and after more than a month they still can't get their hands on the CD. I ordered directly from a band related site and received the CD a week later.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Album May 4, 2013

For those who like New Grass or American Folk you get all that but with a twist of something else that's hard to put a finger on. Great way to keep a traditional style of music fresh!

Love the CD, it haunts me!
Hate the cloud player. If I am in an area with no internet service, I cannot hear my CD. Boo.
