Editorial Reviews

Easily the heaviest band to have released material via Sub Pop, Tad Doyle and his eponymous outfit began the grizzled metal assault with God's Balls in 1989, then followed up a year later with Salt Lick. As heavyweight bookends, each album was also produced, ironically, by engineers whose careers were elevated by recording Nirvana albums: Jack Endino (God's Balls) with Bleach and Steve Albini (Salt Lick) with In Utero. For Sub Pop, Tad presented an anomalous situation; these were gigantic men -- particularly Doyle himself -- with a real fondness for the woodsmen aesthetic: chainsaws, big trucks, weaponry, lumberjack gear, and positively bulldozing riffs and rhythms. Along with Helmet, Tad helped set the template for the heavyweight crossover metal bands who populated the airwaves and MTV in the late '90s. But Doyle's gift as a writer was not only in constructing megaliths of rock, but in incorporating an inherent tunefulness and melody in each song, thereby tempering the ham-fistedness of most of the material, all delivered, of course, with his Texas Chainsaw Massacre vocals. On these two albums the band was honing their chops. Some claim these to be the Tad's finest, but that was yet to come. 8-Way Santa ratchets up the melodic structures a little further, and from there Tad went on to record two albums for major labels, neither of which assisted the band in any way. -All Music Guide

4.0 out of 5 stars now you're cookin' with gas!, November 26, 2004
This review is from: Salt Lick (Audio CD)
this album is what the ideal soundtrack to maximum overdrive by stephen king would be. the music, like a mack truck, doesn't need to be going 100 mph to leave you a mess (in a good way!). my appreciation of this album is a purely visceral reaction to the music, Tad's voice, the unreal aural assault of the instruments - it all combines to make one of my favorite albums of all time. i highly recommend keeping a close eye on your speed if you listen to this in the car!

5.0 out of 5 stars TAD at their best!, March 13, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Salt Lick (Audio CD)
These two albums: "Salt Lick" and "Gods Balls" are TAD at their hick image and Grunge/Sludge hybrid best. Think of them as the Northeast's answer to Crowbar. This has to be the darkest Grunge album of all time. TAD,The Melvins, and Soundgarden should have been what Grunge was all about (screw Nirvana!)

My favorite songs on here are 'Wood Goblins','Pork Chop','Helot', and 'Axe to Grind'. If you like this album (and you will), check "Houdini" from The Melvins and "Badmotorfinger" from Soundgarden. Also, be sure to look out in 2007 for unreleased TAD material! Enjoy!
