About the Author

A native of upstate New York, after graduating from The Johns Hopkins University in 1976, Michele moved to Portland, Oregon to attend law school at Lewis & Clark. She has practiced law on the Oregon Coast for almost 30 years.

In her legal career, Michele has represented a wide variety of clients, including commercial fishermen and their associations.

In the world of fisheries and oceans, Michele serves on the Board of Directors of the North Pacific Research Board, and, as a two-term Presidential appointee, is a Commissioner with the U.S. Arctic Research Commission.

Michele and her husband, Bob Eder, make their home in Newport, Oregon, where they raised two sons, Ben and Dylan. Bob has been an owner-operator of commercial fishing vessels for over 30 years, catching Dungeness crab and sablefish. Michele has been an active partner in the family fishing business.

Involved in both professional and community associations, Michele's interests have centered around those groups that contribute to the support of families and children, such as the YMCA and Newport Fishermen s Wives. Currently, she serves on the Board of Directors of the Newport Library Foundation.

For fun, Michele reads, writes, cooks and eats, plays tennis and bridge, gardens, digs in junk stores for hidden treasures, and walks on the beach with her family, friends and dogs. She travels as much as she can and loves the energy of cities, an enjoyable contrast to a quiet life at home. She visits the Fishermen s Memorial regularly, taking flowers from her garden to Ben...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very much recommended for anyone with family in the commercial fishing industry, December 7, 2008
This review is from: Salt In Our Blood: The Memoir of a Fisherman's Wife (Paperback)
The life of a fisherman can be a treacherous one filled with peril and potential death. The life of a fisherman's wife may be worse due to the unknowing and non-stop confusion one faces. "Salt in Our Blood: The Memoir of a Fisherman's Wife" is the reflections of a homemaker when the family business is doing a job with a shockingly high mortality rate. The daily worry, the daily challenges, and the unfortunate event of what they fear most occurring. "Salt in Our Blood" is very much recommended for anyone with family in the commercial fishing industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a gem, November 23, 2008
This review is from: Salt In Our Blood: The Memoir of a Fisherman's Wife (Paperback)
In December 2001, I read a newspaper article that gave the bare details of What Happened, much of which will always be a mystery. But aside from the names, I was able to imagine only vaguely the human side of this story.

Last week a friend put this book in my hands, and I haven't stopped reading it. Going back, following the timeline, noting how the book breaks sharply in the middle, when everything changes... beautiful. On my first read, I did not stop from the introduction until the last page. To me, that's one litmus test of a good book that tells a captivating story. It's honest writing as well, real open-a-vein storytelling, but done with love, courage, and precision.
