Not Cheap, High Value... The Sound of Surprise!,

John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie is "The Sound of Surprise," and this low cost set will be a very pleasant surprise if you pick it up; here contained are truly many of Birk's great works. This Value priced set is not cheapened... In fact at 10 discs and roughly 134 tunes, this set is quality in every way with the exception of packaging and liner notes. If you care enough to know where each track derived, you have to go deep into study (which is where I'm at). But the sound enjoyment alone is nearly unmatched. Let me explain...
I'm a purist, I don't like collections for the most part, I like to collect individual (newly remastered albums) i.e. anything remastered in the last decade by Rudy Van Gelder for Blue Note or Prestige, anything remastered by Orrin Keepnews for Riverside, Columbia's fantastic remasters, and Verve's Desert Island Discs (especially "Ella and Louis") etc. These discs from "Salt Peanuts" are priceless time pieces, which you can certainly collect individually, although I've found that some of the original albums are out of print, so you may be paying a pretty penny. It is rather unfortunate that Dizzy is not remastered, or re-released nearly as much as the great John Coltrane, or Miles Davis. His mark on Jazz is certainly comparable and as important - I digress. Needless to say to anyone in the know, Dizzy Gillespie is amazing! Here, you get a great overview of his career going back to 40's work with Earl Hines, jams with Tadd Dameron; the incomparable be-bop of "Bird & Diz" with Charlie Parker, and other jazz greats Cab Calloway, Bud Powell; & Billy Eckstine to say the least. In his career Diz recorded for labels: Pablo, Verve, Savoy, RCA, and Milan. I'm still figuring it out, but this set seems to draw from nearly every era of Dizzy's 55+ years in jazz. Impressive? Yes! A few years back I was luck enough to find a 10 disc collection of Miles Davis called "Just Squeeze Me," for $10 at Wal-mart of all places. Like this set the sound quality in many instances equals or bests the most recent releases of the original album sources. The company/label responsible in this case is either "Membran Music" or "Documents." I believe they are based in Germany and these German's do it right. The sound quality is crisp, and over the decades of material of which this set is comprised, there is consistency in sound quality which is often lacking in many big bright American compilations. So I give the incredible Jazz, scat-singing, Afro-Jazz, Afro-Cuban Jazz, Bebop, Spanish Tinge Swing, trumpet stylings of Dizzy 5+ stars, and this set a commendable 4.5 stars. At the current $16 to $20 dollars for 10 discs I add that it is a must buy and essential purchase if you can get your hands on these somewhat rare copies, printed circa 2006. If these don't quench your thirst for the great sounds of "Diz" then I recommend rounding out/completing your collection with the now in-print original albums such as "Bird and Diz," "Birk's Works," "Afro," "Live at the Monterey Jazz Fest...," "Live at Newport...," and my fav "Sonny Side Up." Getting this collection will be a big pump in the arm; inspiring you to get the others, and if you never get around to the others, then you have quite a great collection in and of itself. That's my 2-cents and Thank You for reading my review. -T

Ten CD's, featuring Dizzy Gillespie as leader or sideman. Dizzy is often heard backing un-named vocalists (ranging from bop and blues to very dated pop ballads). All of his most famous tunes are here, though, from early '40's experiments with Charlie Parker to later sambas, scat vocals, and Cuban sounds. "Salt Peanuts", "Yesterdays", "Ooo Ya Koo", "Ooh Bop Sh Bam" "Tin Tin Deo", "Birks Works", "A Night In Tunisia", etc., but not necessarily the most popular versions. Typically for the Membran brand, packaging is bare-bones,with no personnel notes, recording dates, or photos. Tracks are randomly arranged--but what a value! Ten CD's in hard box, individual cardboard sleeves, each with same photo. Thirteen to fifteen tunes per CD, average about 45 minutes. Almost all mono, recorded from 1940's to 1970's, many original labels, including Dial, Prestige, RCA.

This looks like it is a greatest hits disc, but it is a live recording done in Quebec with a lackluster quintet. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS! The song list looks like it would be a greatest hits of Dizzy, but there are many other better offerings.
