I had never heard of Chris Bathgate until about a month ago when I listened to one track ("No Silver") that was on NPR's "All Songs Considered" website. I was immediately taken by his rich, deep voice and the appealing arrangement (great acoustic instrumentation and layering). I was fortunate enough to be able to catch one of his Michigan CD release parties last week and got to hear the whole album performed live and pick up an early copy of the CD. I haven't been able to stop listening to it since. I can't say enough about this music. The melodies are gorgeous, the playing perfect, the arrangements inventive.

This is not your run-of-the-mill singer-songwriter stuff. It's hard to categorize. I would say it is a mixture of folk-rock, americana, indie-folk and art-rock. The samples will give you a good idea. The music is accessible but very interesting and crafted with a lot of thought. Chris Bathgate is extremely gifted, and had some great helpers on this album. You will not regret buying this album.

Everyone will have their own reference points for comparison. To me the album brings Bon Iver's "For Emma" to mind a little bit, although I think this album is superior to that great album in many ways. As far as Chris' vocals go, I am sometimes reminded of Richard Thompson, but that could just be me.

Wow, this was exactly what I was looking for. Unique, not your regular Americana stuff. Great rhythm section. Haunting but melodious. Don't listen to me, listen to this CD...over and over again. For fans of Rocky Votolato, Damien Jurado, and A.A. Bondy.

This album may possibly ruin all future music for me. It IS that good! I'm glad he has made it through his salt year, with something amazing to share with the world.
