I like this product. I think that for the money, it was a good investment. Whenever I have problems with the scale shutting off it is because I have not prepped my ingredients so that I am adding them too slowly. I like the look of scale and its size. I actually store mine on top of my toaster. I use my scale almost every day and I am pleased with the results.
My only complaint is that the grams are in increments of 5. I have some recipes that call for 62 g or 19 g of something, but being off by a few grams hasn't hurt the results. The only other scale I considered before purchasing this one was the Soehnle Futura. The comparable model is $30 more and it's a pain to switch between ounces and grams. As another reviewer noted, this scale would be perfect if you could use an AC adapter or disable the automatic shut off feature.

I am in my fourth year of teaching a culinary arts class at a local high school and I have used this scale extensively during that time with excellent results. A reviewer wrote that the scale will automatically turn off while measuring. This will only happen if you add very small amounts too slowly or if you pause for an extended time before adding an ingredient. For the price I do not think there is a better, more versatile scale on the market. I would rate the scale an overall 5 rather than 4 if an AC adaptor option was availabe that allowed continuous operation without automatic shut off.

A good scale, but keeps shutting off by itself....,

I would keep this scale if it weren't for the annoying fact that it constantly shuts itself off. I realize there is an automatic shutoff, but it will shutoff while I'm pouring ingredients. This would irritate anybody. At first, i thought i just bought a lemon; however, i returned the first defective Aquatronic and exchanged it for another and it stills does the same thing. sigh... oh well...

Keeps shutting off - in the middle of pouring ingredients!,

This scale would be great if it didn't shut off in the middle of pouring ingredients. I have followed recommendations of other reviewers and poured more quickly, didn't pause, etc. and it just doesn't matter. The scale shuts off as flour is hitting the bowl, so if I need to measure 7 oz, I'll get to 3 oz and then it will shut off. It is VERY frustrating and the help number on the manual is now going to AT&T, not Salter.
If you use 2 bowls to measure everything & constantly start over, it works. But it makes twice the mess and is four times as frustrating. I can't recommend this product, and wish there was a solution to the shut-off problem.

This scale is a blessing and a curse!,

This scale is a blessing and a curse for me. I love it but like the other reviewers have noted - it's shuts off too quickly. I also have accepted the fact that the scale measures in increments of 5, so it is not exacting. The methodology behind this scale is very cool and I can work with it despite its annoying limitations. That said, for folks looking for a recommendation - I would look for an alternative scale with more positive reviews.

accurate, fun and easy to use,

I love this scale. It works easily and is so versitile. I can add ingredients to the bowl as I go along (say, as I scoop ice cream) or even weigh liquids (say, a few ml of broth). As described it works in both measuring systems for solids and liquids. It is easy to store in a cabinet so that it can be handy. I use mine all the time and don't know what I did without one! It is worth the money because it performs so well. Great for any fastidious cook or dieter.

Good thing for Salter, some of us went to science class and know that not all liquids have the same density/weight. And that most of the world knows that one ounce of water doesn't weigh one ounce.

A gimmick that's not worth the money,

In terms of ability to weigh items accurately, this scale is reasonable - no better or worse than any other I've used. In terms of feature-set, though, it is quite appalling. The scale switches itself off after a ludicrously short time, meaning that unless you have all of your ingredients prepared ahead of time, you'll find that halfway through measuring, the unit has switched off (losing the weight you were halfway through measuring). If you can't remember what the weight was then you're stuck with a problem.
Also, the "aquatronic" portion of the scale, ie. its ability to measure fluid ounces and milliliters, is a complete and utter gimmick. Grams and milliliters are identical; ditto ounces and fluid ounces. The extra button is only there to fool the naive into thinking the scale is doing something special. The gimmick also requires a poorly made spiral-bound notebook that you'll immediately lose, which tells you how to convert from a handful of ingredients to measure by weight. All in all, this scale is completely unworthy of its pricetag. |
