5.0 out of 5 stars Good kitchen scale, not for precision weighing
Bought the Salter 1004 Digital Kitchen Scale a few months back and have used it to weigh everything from food to a pine wood derby car. While it's not accurate beyond one quarter of an ounce, it is accurate enough for weighing sliced carrots for a stir fry. So if you are looking for a scale to weigh gold dust, look at another model.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good scale with some caveats
I bought this for the simple design, ability to store upright to save counter space, and the ease of switching between oz. and grams with a button on the front (unlike the Soehlne that was rated best by Cooks Illustrated). That said, the scale is so small that it's sometimes difficult to read the display. Also, it's not terribly accurate. If you want to test it, try...

The auto zero function is by far the best loved feature of this scale. You place the bowl on the scale first, press the on button and then toss the food being weighed into the bowl. It couldn't be simpler and there is proprietary bowl that constantly needs cleaning before the next use.

The easy to clean stainless steel surface makes the scale something always ready for use. And the fact that you can store the scale vertically means it can be stored in that unused space between the wall and another kitchen appliance. Which saves tons of space on the kitchen counter without making the scale something so hard to get to it is never used.

While it's not the cheapest scale on the market, this feature rich model is well worth its price tag. Treat is with care and it will be the last kitchen scale you will ever need to buy.

That said, the scale is so small that it's sometimes difficult to read the display. Also, it's not terribly accurate. If you want to test it, try weighing 10 quarters. They should total 2 oz. Mine read 1 3/4 oz. If you need super precision, this is not for you. I especially like the conversion between grams and oz. I use a lot of international recipes that use the metric system.

I chose this Salter scale because the smooth surface allows for more room to weigh food. Also, there are no edges to impede the use of a bowl. I haven't been disappointed!! It is superslim, lightweight, and easy to clean. You can choose between grams and ounces, zero out when you are using a container, and it turns off automatically. My favorite feature is the ability to add or subtract food while weighing - perfect for ensuring that my portions are the right size!

5.0 out of 5 stars Form and Function in One Package, March 13, 2006
This review is from: Salter 11-Pound Square Stainless-Steel Digital Kitchen Scale (Kitchen)
The Salter 1004 11-Pound Square Stainless-Steel Digital Kitchen Scale is one of those appliances that you are delighted to leave out on the counter. The scale has a small footprint, stylish design and cool stainless steel construction. Functionally it is simple to use with a push of a button (or two if you want to switch between grams and ounces) with a clearly visable LCD display. Make sure you have some stainless steel cleaner to make clean up of spills a breeze. This scale is a form and function dream over the clunky mechanical scales. Well worth the premium.

Salter/Taylor Co.: Great folks to do business with; after 5 or 6 years, Salter 6055 died under 10year warranty. Customer service new pho. 866-843-3905 (Google 'salterhousewares'); super pleasant, cooperative, efficient. 6055's are "out of production" so they're sending a 1004, very similar mechanically, without any hassle.

This review is from: Salter 11-Pound Square Stainless-Steel Digital Kitchen Scale (Kitchen)
I purchased a $25 Escali scale that had been rated fairly high on Amazon, but I found that it looked pretty cheap when I received it. I decided I wanted something that would look better in my kitchen, so I exchanged it and paid twice the price for this Salter, which seemed like it might be a good fit given the reviews and pictures.

The Salter does look a little better, but not by a lot. It uses a similar cheap plastic for its base. The metal measuring surface is a thin layer of sheet metal that does a lot to hide the plastic and improve the overall look of the device, but on my unit the glue binding metal to plastic was starting to come undone. The overall feel of the device was cheap. In addition, it uses button batteries instead of something you're more likely to keep stocked around the house.

I return the Salter and purchased the Oxo, which appears to be better than the Salter in every way. They're both the same price, the Oxo is higher quality, looks better, the screen is more informative, and it takes regular batteries.

This scale was purchased for use in a bakery, where water, flour, and other messy ingredients are used regularly. It cleans up very easily, and it makes weighing ingredients in bowls or measuring cups simple. You will not be disappointed with this scale. I don't think you could beat it for this price.

This is a good product for small kitchen use. The 1st one I purchased came in defective, but Amazon quickly replaced the unit at no charge to me. The second one works fine.

I bought this item for it's ability to stand on end for storage purposes. I do not know if I had a defective item, but standing it on end made it not work properly as though I had disturbed its equilibrium. In order to get it to work, I had to shake it, take the batteries out for a few minutes or bang it on the counter. Not a good scenario. For $49.00, it should have worked at least. We kept it a bit too long to return it in good faith, so I ended up throwing it away. I bought an EatSmart Precision Pro - Multifunction Digital Kitchen here on Amazon for half the price and I am twice as satisfied.

2.0 out of 5 stars not accurate, August 19, 2008

I liked the style and ease of use of this scale but it was inaccurate - it showed 4 gms over true weight -- not accurate enough for me and it also seemed to be inconsistent at times. I returned it and purchased a Chefmate stainless steel kitchen scale at Target for $39.99 which I love. It has all the same features - weighs up to 11 lbs and measures in increments of 1 g/.1 oz/1 ml. It also has the tare feature. It is has been very consistent and is more accurate.
