Product Description

Amazon.com Review

There’s something pleasantly uncomplicated about a mechanical scale, with no buttons to push or batteries to replace. Oversized with a chrome-plated metal body, this classic kitchen model comes with a handsome 9-inch stainless-steel weighing bowl. To use, simply nestle the bowl on the scale’s arms and turn the mechanism knob until the dial needle registers zero. Add and weigh food as needed. For best results wash the bowl by hand. Easy to read, the large 6-inch dial shows both imperial and metric, in 1-ounce increments up to 11 pounds, and 25-gram increments up to 5 kilograms. The scale measures 5-1/2 by 6-1/2 inches at the base, and with the bowl on top, stands 11 inches high. Salter covers the scale with a 10-year warranty. --Ann Bieri

4.0 out of 5 stars A very nice mechanical scale...., October 21, 2005

I bought this scale because I have many recipes that call for ingredients in weight, rather than amount. I've also been watching my weight and this scale works well with measuring quantities listed on the FDA postings on packaging. I just set my bowl or measuring cup in the stainless steel basin and adjust the scale to zero and add my cereal, ingredients, etc. The scale is easy to read and keep clean. My only concern about it is the material used to delineate the weight scale on the dial. It's paper and will no doubt stain and yellow with time. A very useful kitchen tool that doesn't require a new battery every few months....

I bought this on the basis of reviews, looks, and a great half-price deal. All seemed to be well for a while, until I had occasion to measure some liquids in a cup. When it took much more than 16 liquid ounces of water (remembering the old high-school physics reminder, "a pint's a pound the world around"), I became suspicious. Some more semi-scientific inquiry (i.e, a couple of 500-gram bags of pasta from the store) made me realize that this scale consistently measures 25% light! No amount of adjustment and tweaking (I even tried "stretching" the coilspring by over-turning the adjuster) made things better. Sorry, but, aesthetics aside, scales need to do only one thing well, and that's to weight stuff accurately. 5% error is (somewhat) forgivable; 25% is a joke. Too bad I tossed the box, but I'm still going to look into a replacement or refund.

I use this both to weigh packages in my business as well as in the kitchen for larger weights (I have a smaller scale for under a pound). It seems very accurate and it's attractive, with a detachable bowl. Good sale price.
