The 9V batteries are expensive too.

I have thought several times that this product stopped working because I couldn't fathom how it could go through a nine volt battery in just a few weeks.

I originally gave this product a great review (see below). However, both of the scales that I purchased broke within a year under normal use, one after only 2 months. Numerous electronics problems. When I attempted to contact the company under the "10 year warranty", they won't respond.

Original review:

This scale weighs foods in both ounces and in grams. Mine is accurate to about +/- 4 grams (about 1/8 ounce). It also has a tare or zero function, meaning you can easily subtract the weight of a bowl or other container by pressing a button prior to adding food. For the price, this is a great basic food scale and provides what most people will need. I looked at others in person before buying this one, and found this was the easiest to use.

The scale stopped working after about a month. It started showing random weights, and wouldn't return to zero. Very rarely it works, but when you really need it, it doesn't work properly! Finally, I gave up and threw it away. From now on, I will always read reviews before I buy anything else. Stay away from this product!

I've had this product for two months and have gone through three 9-Volt batteries. Before it wore out, the last scale I had didn't use that many in three years. So far I've gotten no response to the complaint I submitted to Salter.

My unit is so dysfunctional that I have to detach the battery to store it. If the battery remains in the unit for more than a few hours, it drains and the scale goes haywire. Aside from this irritating feature, the scale is reasonably, but not terribly, precise.

This scale stopped working on me after only six weeks at home. I only purchased it for bread baking, and made about 3-4 loaves before it gave out. Avoid this product and, I suspect, all others made by this company.

I bought this scale in 2008. I use it about 4 times a week and have had no problems with it at all. I only remember changing the battery once. Could be more than that, but it certainly doesn't eat batteries. My only complaint is there isn't much contrast on the readout so it can be hard to see, and larger bowls and plates overhang the readout making it awkward to see. I was researching kitchen scales for a friend and was surprised to see the bad reviews on this scale. But here's the interesting part. Like another reviewer who rated it well, I also got mine at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Could the wholesaler be sending different stock to different retailers?

This small kitchen scale is attractive, accurate, and easy to use and is fine for weighing lightweight items to an eighth of an ounce or a single gram. It's small, lightweight and easy to store as well.

The one difficulty I have with this item is that the automatic shutoff (to save battery life) has a tendency of working too soon, sometimes WHILE I'm weighing items. Because turning it on re-zeros the scale, I've often had to start over with the weighing process. This is very inconvenient when dealing with liquids.

The scale runs on a small lithium battery about the size of a dime. Many people have stated that the scale has a too-short battery life. Mine has been working for longer than people report. Although, the quick auto shutoff might simply be a case of the battery life.

The Salter Housewares Stainless steel electronic scale was as expected. happy with the item with the exception that the battery died in a week. My thought here is the item was in inventory for some time and the battery life just got old.
