Right out of the box, it wasn't the right color. Mustard instead of white. Then it is labeled a "Frozen desert maker". There is no model number. I'm not sure it's what I ordered. Following the instructions to set the timer does not seem to do anything. I hear parts are unavailable. Sad because the pot is very delicate, already dented and I'm super careful. The dasher is not exactly robust either. But it works! And makes great ice cream. That's a big deal when you live hours from the store.

I can't understand why this unit is discontinued and no parts are available. It works great,looks great,and the price is competitive. The cover was slightly cracked when I recieved it as a result of being put in the packing box upside down. I'm going to return it even though it still works. If the cover cracks further or the beater breaks I don't want to wind up with an expensive piece of junk.

We're really happy with our Salton ice-cream maker. We've been making low calorie blueberry and peach ice cream that meets the restrictions of a weight-loss diet and tastes fabulous! (The high calorie chocolate etc. are awesome, too!) It's super easy to use, and in less than an hour we have a terrific dessert - even without going to the store, most of the time. Our only criticism is that it's pretty noisy. We're careful to transfer the ice-cream to a different container so we don't scratch or dent the special mixer container you make the ice cream in.

I've had one of these for a few weeks. When it's working, it's great, but the quality of the machine itself is lacking. After making only one batch of ice cream, I found that I wasn't able to get the motor to reattach to the machine. It turns out the doohickey it plugs into was not properly attached to the body and had partially fallen into the machine. I had to disassemble the machine to fix it. Then a couple of weeks later, the motor stops turning. I took that apart and found that the wiring connections to the motor were bad. It looks like maybe the motor didn't fit well into the housing so they chopped off part of the connector and then did a terrible job of soldering the wires to what's left of it. On the positive side, all it takes is a phillips screwdriver to take it apart so it's been easy to service.

I have had this machine for about 2 months now and absolutely love it! It is very easy to use and I have enjoyed experimenting with new flavors of ice cream. The instruction booklet that comes with it is very good and also has quite a few recipes. My only minor complaint is that it is somewhat loud, so that if I were to use it with guests over, I would probably put it in another room. On the positive side, the machine does turn itself off when the timer has run out. Also, the paddle will change directions (and make a noticeably different sound) when the icecream has reached a thick consistency and is ready to eat or put in the freezer. These are 2 great features that will help prevent damage to the machine. All in all, I am very pleased with this purchase.

This unit does everything it says, plus is easy to use and to clean. One must: when you make an ice cream mix, you must refrigerate it for several hours to get proper hard freezing in the Big Chill. Room temperature mixtures will get only to soft serve consistency at best. The good news is if you need more freezing time, it is easy to add time at the end of the cycle.

A note: after freezing one batch, you need to turn off the compressor so it can rest for 60 minutes before freezing another batch; you cannot make batch after batch without stopping. However, for making one (good sized) batch of ice cream, or a large dose of frozen drinks, it works great right out of the box. Works great with soy milk, too.

And yes, it is noisy.
