Not a great choice,
By
This review is from: Salton RA7A 7-Cup Rice Cooker (Kitchen)
After seeing my friend's rice cooker I was excited to buy one. There are two basic models: the "sealed" type and the types like this one, which just have a lid. I bought this one because it was cheaper, but the sealed ones work much better and are well worth the money. This one bubbles up and I have to keep the lid propped open. It's messy and for this reason I don't use it very often. I'm going to buy a sealed one and I suggest the same for you.

This is the only rice cooker I have owned, so I can't compare it to others. But I can tell you that my experience with it has been good.Basically, what I wanted was rice like I get at the take-out Chinese restraunt I go to. Sticky, tasty, white rice. You just can't accomplish this kind of rice on the stovetop. I've tried, came close, but no cigar. The first few times I used my ricemaker, I was dissapointed - only to find out I wasn't making the rice correctly. You have to follow the directions IN the box of the ricemaker, not on the bag of rice. After I got my directions right, I've been able to make hassle-free, perfect rice. It's cheap, easy and relatively fast. What more could you want? ... mine does not bubble over at all. It honestly makes fantastic rice all the time.

I got this one as a wedding present. Less than a year later, it overheated and melted its foot. I sent it back to Salton and eventually received a new one. Less than a year later, the new one overheated. Save your house from burning down and buy yourself a better one.

I purchased this rice cooker as a gift for a close friend. I own the same rice cooker too. I read a couple surprisingly "not so favorable" ratings by other reviewers, and I only have one thing to say - FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!! Ok and one more thing - a little tip for all of you "would be" purchasers - Be sure to dry the rice cooker pot before you place it on the base. If you don't, the water from the pot will seep into the base, and guess what ? It will eventually stop working, or just blow up!! (That's what usually happens when electrical appliances and water mix). If you always dry the pot, then you shouldn't have any problems with the cooker itself.
You can even adjust the "dryness" of the rice. Sometimes you want the rice a little more sticky - for example, if you're going to make california rolls (sushi rolls) or if you're making porridge. Then you can add a tiny bit more water. If you're just making a pot of rice to eat with a stir fry, or you're making fried rice, just follow the directions and you'll have a great pot of rice. I cook brown rice in this rice cooker. It takes a tiny bit longer than cooking that refined & processed white rice, but brown rice is a lot better for you!

Great Rice Cooker - - Great Gift for College Kids,
By
This review is from: Salton RA7A 7-Cup Rice Cooker (Kitchen)
I'm currently in my freshman year of college. One of my birthday gifts was this rice cooker (at first I was like a rice cooker, wow, thanks a lot). However, I have come to love this little baby. First, it's the right price! Second, it is perfect for someone trying to make a small to medium size of rice. I throw in 3 cups of rice, and I can eat that for a great lunch. I throw in some soy sauce, or brown sauce and wow what a meal!
It cooks perfectly for me (you just have to follow the directions). I throw in my rice, take a shower, or do some homework, come back and the cooker is done, still warming my rice and waiting for me to eat it up. I would reccommend this rice cooker to anyone, especially a college student. I have kids in my room all the time, asking me for some of my rice..

It's Good but Has Bad Points, Too,
By
This review is from: Salton RA7A 7-Cup Rice Cooker (Kitchen)
My husband and I constantly argue over my rice cooker. He doesn't like it and wants to get a new one, and I like it. It's not as bulky as others, it cooks a great deal of rice, and it cleans up very quickly. It's also very easy to use -- my 9 year old has no problem: just add water, rice, plug it in.But then there's the other side. Although you are supposedly able to leave it alone, you do need to stir the rice every now and then to make sure it doesn't stick and burn. Also, the lid gets very very hot, and you have to worry about setting it down somewhere it won't break or be overly cooled and crack. It cooks faster than the guidelines say, also, so you have to watch the time. But other than that it's fine. I've never had a problem with overheating or parts melting or anything, and I have had mine for several years. It's a trusty hardworking little machine, but it's probably not for everyone.

Disappointing,

I'm not picky or a rice snob, and all I ask of a rice cooker is that it makes decent, edible rice. I bought this rice cooker after my cheapo White-Westinghouse one (which was really great!) finally stopped working, and was very disappointed. The lid sputtered and spat, which is something I'd be willing to overlook if the rice was okay, but it was substandard - it came out tough and slightly burned on the bottom and overcooked and mushy on the top.

Rice cooker for a family,
By
This review is from: Salton RA7A 7-Cup Rice Cooker (Kitchen)
This rice cooker is a little too big for the two of use, but works just fine. It tends to overcook the rice on the bottom of the pot if left on warm for long , as my old Salton rice cooker did. The plastic around the steam hole in the lid disappeared quickly, but things still seem to work. Nothing special, but ok for the price.
