Book Description

May 1, 2010

Since 2001, more than 1.9 million Americans have been deployed to war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan, displaying the highest form of service to country.

Starting November 8, 2009, and continuing daily through year's end, the Stephens Media newspapers and Web sites are sharing the stories of more than 50 men and women who have received top commendations for bravery and valor.

War is tragic and frightening. These stories, however, will tell of individuals who acted selflessly when thrust into life-or-death situations.

The commemorative companion book to the Saluting American Valor project is an ideal keepsake or gift. A hardcover "coffee table" edition, it is full color throughout and includes the profiles of all of the servicemen and servicewomen featured in the Saluting American Valor series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Heroes, November 5, 2010
This review is from: Saluting American Valor: Selfless Courage at the Moment of Truth (Hardcover)
After reading this book, my admiration for our military increased 10-fold. The bravery and cool they showed under stress was amazing. To be willing to risk your life, flying under adverse conditions, saving people shows the true character of our military, and it shows why service members are often some of societies most admired members(except in Berkley, CA). The people in this book are role models and should be thought of as such.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Overdue Salute!, July 29, 2010
This review is from: Saluting American Valor: Selfless Courage at the Moment of Truth (Hardcover)
How unique to see a media organization the size of Stephens Media take on a project like this: "Saluting American Valor" is an collection of the stories where our Marines, soldiers, and other servicemen earned Bronze Stars and higher while fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

And what stories they are: from Marine GySgt Justin Lehew (Navy Cross) running across a road at An-Nasiriyh to rescue Marines while under fire "I knew things were serious when a young Marine fell out and he was on fire" to Army SSGT Jason Brown destroying a column of Iraqi tanks with his uncanny Javelin fire, "Saluting American Valor" puts a personal face on the last nine years of war better than most books on the market.

Well written by a small group of military journalists, this book contains some 100 stories complete with interviews, maps, and actual photos from the battlefield. There's no politics, no strategy, and no geopolitical or religious implications; "Saluting American Valor" is simply an elegant 'thank you' to some incredibly brave men and women for a job exceptionally well done.
