Editorial Reviews

THE DEATH AND REBIRTH OF SALVADOR DALI Dali was born with an innate fear about what was happening in the world. His sensitive soul could not explain why people were so good or so bad. He was born in the small town of Figurers, in southeastern Spain, in 1904. In this episode the childhood of Dali is described. The death of his younger brother influenced the whole family. His parents - and especially his mother - considered the second child a replacement for the first. An irrepressible metaphysical force impelled her to see in the entity of the second Salvador, the soul of the first child. The idea of two bodies in one soul was conveyed every day by the mother - in her behavior and her stories - to her young son. Thus, the second Salvador began to believe that he was an extension of his older, dead brother. His mother and father had a photograph of the first Salvador hanging above their bed. The second Salvador used to sit cross-legged for hours on his parents' bed, gazing at the photograph of his dead self. A peculiar story of double personality had left its mark on Dali's life.DALI AND GALAWhen Dali turns 16, he suffers a great blow that costs his sensitive soul dearly. His mother dies of cancer. The death of his most beloved person means the death of his self-confidence. Dali is, by his very nature, a solitary person. Crowds suffocate him. The loss of his mother is the loss of any kind of love. In 1922, he enrolled in the Madrid School of Fine Arts. His talent was rapidly developing. In 1926, he decides to move to Paris. During that period, Surrealism is blossoming in the city of light. In his third year in Paris, and while his work has still not been noticed, Dali meets the woman who will direct his future and his fate... Gala. He is a young man of 25, without a clearly-shaped personality. She is 36 years old, with a strong personality, full of self-confidence, and well known in Surrealist circles. In Gala, Dali finds the paragon for his wildest fantasies and, at the same time, the saintly being of his religious visions. Gala becomes the dark abyss and the luminous sky of his soul. His muse, lover and mother, all together. A journey to the unexplored world of the soul of a person that made lunacy art and entered the space of the 4th dimension with his brush and pallets.A trilogy of life dedicated to lovers, to art and to the misapprehension of the biggest surrealist of the 20th century! A film that unfolds the unknown world of the soul of the artist Dali, with the angels and demons that torture his conscience, the macabre forms of darkness and the dreamlike figures of Gala, the woman who engraved the street of glory for him.

Not the easiest thing to watch out of the gate. Understanding what the producers were wanting to deliver does take a bit of faith in the beginning. I say go with the flow and let the story unfold. Great context, stories in stories, lessons on the art of one of the greatest "artist" in the past 100 years.

I liked this film on Dali much better than "Dali in New York."

This one focused more on his work and his personal history than his public personality. It also disclosed a much different Dali during moments when he wasn't in the public eye.

Don't miss the DVD extra content. I found it quite informative, with information about the Golden Proportions that I've already put to use.

the visual impact is great but unless one already know something about Dali I think it might be a little hard to follow the narrative.
