Book Description

Salvaged Love is the story of a young girl's journey into womanhood and her need to carve a place for herself in the small island community and in the heart of her husband. Set in 1828 at the cusp of Key West's rise to wealth from ship salvaging, the story blends fact and fiction to entertain and highlight the fascinating history of Key West, Florida.

Nineteen year old Abigail Bennington eagerly accepts her father's invitation to sail to the Caribbean in a desperate need to escape her current situation. They sail from England expecting a six month holiday. Plans turn awry when they become stranded in Key West, a newly settled island at the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico, surrounded by treacherous reef and inhabited mostly by men. Abby becomes enchanted with the tiny island and its residents until circumstances force her father to insist she marry. Now locked in matrimony, can the young couple's burgeoning love survive resentment and isolation?

About the Author

Susan Blackmon has enjoyed reading historical novels all her life. With a talent for writing it was only natural for her to try her hand at creating one of her own. All that was missing was inspiration. An unexpected cruise ship detour to Key West and a few history tours later, Max and Abby’s story began. When Susan isn’t working full-time and writing part-time, she enjoys being with her family, hiking waterfalls, reading and scrapbooking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent December 21, 2012
Format:Paperback
Very well written and painstakingly accurate in the historical timeline. It's one of those books you can't put down. While Susan Blackmon may be a new author on the scene, she has a natural ability for writing books and has done an excellent job in researching to make her book more than just a piece of fiction. I am looking forward to reading more of her books in the future.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save Your Time May 31, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this book after reading promising reviews, and now wish I hadn't. The wording was awkward, as if someone was retelling the novel verbally. There were grammatical errors, but not as many as some books. The characters were unrealistic, the male, Max, was simply rude and always had an excuse for why he treated people how he did. The resolution occurred in the last pages of the book with no real build up. Character names were confusing as well, one character going from Victoria to Tria and ack in one sentence. Many sentences were abnormally long and verbose. While I have read worse, I would not recommend this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting February 27, 2013

Loved this story. The many historical facts woven into it are informative rather than boring bits to skip over. As usual, the lovers seem to be at cross purposes throughout but isn't that true even in our everyday world sometimes?

I read this book while on vacation in Key West. I just finished it on the flight home. It was very interesting while walking around Key West to see street names and other points of reference mentioned in the story and picture what it was like for the main characters and learn some Key West history. Great story, looking forward to the second installment!

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Debut Novel April 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Salvaged Love is subtitled A Historic Novel of Key West 1828-1829. The words "historic novel" caught my eye and I loaded this to my Kindle on a whim. I had never heard of its author, Susan Blackmon, and quickly learned Salvaged Love was her debut novel. Despite having traveled to Florida many times, I have never visited Key West or heard much about its history. After reading Salvaged Love, I felt as if I had visited the island, albeit as it was in 1828-29, and knew I had learned a bit of its history.

The story centers around the coming of age of Abigail Bennington, 19-year old daughter of Richard Bennington. Bennington acquired his fortunate in the shipping business. Abigail is surprised when her father invites to join him on one of his business trips. As he explains, Bennington's next trip is to the Caribbean and then on to Montgomery, Alabama, where his brother has a cotton plantation. Spurred on by desperate desire to excape her current situation, Abigail excitedly accepts her father's invitation. Their holiday will last six months.

A detour changes their plans when they become stranded on Key West, a newly formed island community inhabited mostly by men and sitting on treacherous coral reefs near the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico. All is well until circumstances force Bennington to insist that Abigail must marry. Soon, Abigail finds herself battling not only her own emotions but her husband's reason for never returning her love and affection in any but a sexual manner. Will this young couple's marriage survive? Will happiness ever inhabit their home? How will Abigail resolve this painful situation?

Susan Blackmon writes with a fluid style which quickly draws her reader into the book by descriptions of people, places and traditions among society.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good and fast read March 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed learning about the settlement of the Keys and how rugged life was because of weather and lack of supplies, including fresh water. I especially loved the romance. This book proves a love story can be written without graphic sex.

3.0 out of 5 stars Made me want to learn more April 3, 2013
By SuziQ
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although historical romance isn't what I normally read, I did enjoy this book. Having been to Key West I was interested in the history the author "painted" of the area and of the life as it must have been during that period.

I felt the story was good and it held my interest but I also felt that the book could be a five-star by giving the characters more depth. Normally when I read I develop a visual image and become emotionally connected with the characters, not so much by description but by action. I can remember the story but only a blurred memory of the characters.

I believe Susan Blackmon has talent, and like any new author, will develop over time with each book. I am eagerly waiting to read her next one.

I got to chapter 3 but no further. The writing hadn't impressed me nor had the characters I had met. Apparently this author's style isn't for me.
