5.0 out of 5 stars A fair review
This CD is the best 12 dollars I have ever spent in my entire life. After reading reviews for this CD I feel that I need to give my 2 cents, because it really is a 5* success. 3.0 out of 5 stars Picture Disc
I would have rated this a star higher, but the, (admittedly impressive), picture disc art leads to a very noisy, lower-fidelity recording than black vinyl would have provided for the Audiophile market, especially during the quiet passages.

This CD is the best 12 dollars I have ever spent in my entire life. After reading reviews for this CD I feel that I need to give my 2 cents, because it really is a 5* success. It seems like every time a band comes out with a new CD everyone feels this urge to say, "meh, its good, but not as good as BLAH BLAH BLAH. There are 11 songs on this CD and I absolutely LOVE 9 of them. It is a bit more polished than the self titled release of last year. Polished is GOOD people. It sounds so crisp and perfect. I absolutely LOVED the self-titled, and now I absolutely love this. They didn't change their sound, they perfected it. Lyrics are a bit darker. I like that though. See for yourself. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW !!!, February 7, 2011
This review is from: Salvation Is a Deep Dark Well (Audio CD)
How did I not hear about these guys earlier? I'm glad I found them now. Nothing has moved me on the first listen since I first heard Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea." I would not compare the two albums in many other way's, however. I would describe it in this way, if the Decemberists had a baby with Trampled By Turtles, Then the Cave Singers had a baby with the Rural Alberta Advantage, and then those babies met and had a baby of their own. All

i can say is WOW !!! I LOVE THIS ALBUM already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Excellence, February 4, 2011

Man I dig this CD. It's an immediately likeable bit of Folk Rock that you'll be tapping your feet and bobbing your head to by the middle of the second song for sure. The music is almost hard, almost upbeat, with darker lyrics and almost wharbling lead vocals that don't grate the nerves but give the songs a certain kind of energy. This one has maintained a regular spot in my car's CD rotation since August of 2010, and it will for the forseeable future as well.

You'll probably like this one too. Give it a shot, it's well worth the $12 and change.

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid album from an incredible band, June 2, 2010

(REAL NAME)
The Builders and the Butchers were the second best opening band I've ever seen. Opening for The Decemberists a few years ago, they commanded the stage with folky Led Zeppelin-style vocals and two (!) drummers pounding out primal beats. I nabbed their debut EP at the show and wore that sucker out. I was excited to see their debut LP come out on this beautiful picture disk at 180grams. Chris Funk from the Decemberists produced this album and definitely added a layer of polish to their already solid sound. The track progression on this album is wonderful, too. If you're a fan of folky rock music, you can't get any better than The Builders and the Butchers.

The first song, Barcelona, is my favorite but the rest of this album is still great. I'm so excited there are terrific, creative bands like this out there!!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's close, but ..., August 21, 2009
This review is from: Salvation Is a Deep Dark Well (Audio CD)
I was so ready for this album. I listen to as many new bands as I can and give them all a chance. With that being said, when I heard the first Builders album I was more excited about a new band then I have been with any new band I can think of for quite some time. I saw these guys every chance I got and kept in some contact with Ryan. However, as good as the album is it doesn't measure up with the first recording. The first album was unstoppable from front to back. This definitely has tracks you will skip on it. "Golden and Green" may be the best song they've ever done. However, "Short Way Home" and "The World is a Top" are the only other songs that are on par with the first album. "The World is a Top" is worth listening to just to hear the guest vocalist belt out that second verse ... man does she have a set of pipes. The overall feel of the album is much more polished and dark than the first record - which isn't bad - the songs just aren't as good. I remember speaking with Ryan about 8 months before this came out, asking when the new record would be out and he said they were still shopping record companies. So this was finished well before it was released which makes me wonder if the bulk of the songs were outtakes from the first album just recorded with more production. It's not a bad album by any means but they set the bar pretty damn high with the first one. If you're just getting into the Builders check that one out first.

2.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it, July 31, 2009

This review is from: Salvation Is a Deep Dark Well (Audio CD)
When I started listening to this album for the first time, I thought I was in for a real treat - the first song is incredible! Man was I wrong...the album begins and ends with its two best tracks, and there's little in between that does anything for me. Musically, it's just not that exciting. Many of the songs just plod along without going anywhere. And with excessive lyrical references to things like Spain and the Devil, the Southern-meets-Spanish gothic vibe that intrigued me at first ends up coming off as silly in the end.

I will say that the guy's voice is very well suited for this kind of music. I just wish that the songwriting were a little more varied and a lot more interesting.
