Book Description

May 8, 1989
Modelled on the form of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, The Salzburg Tales contains a series of interlinked stories and fables. The narrators are gathered for the famous festival at Salzburg: the Festival Director, a Viennese conductor, a Scottish doctor, an archbishop and a dull English bore are among the characters who pass the time in telling fantastic and unusual tales. Christina Stead's intelligent writing is displayed at its best in this ambitious collection, which was first published in 1934.

About the Author

Christina Stead (1902-1983) was an Australian-born novelist and short-story writer acclaimed for her satirical wit and penetrating psychological characterisations. She wrote fifteen novels and several volumes of short stories in her lifetime, during which she spent many years living abroad in Europe and the USA, returning to Australia to live only late in life. Considered by many to have been one of Australia's greatest novelists, Stead's best-known and most acclaimed novel, The Man Who Loved Children, is largely based on her own childhood, and was first published in 1940. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
