Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This is my first children's story.  The inspiration for it came from an incident that happened many years ago when our boys were little.  We lived in a mobile home and every time the furnace turned on it made a lot of noise.  Each time the boys would immediately stop what they were doing and ask "what's that?" and at some point, my wife walked them down to the cabinet that hid the furnace and told them that a dragon lives in there and the noise they hear is just the dragon waking up and blowing warm air to heat the house.  From that time on, whenever the furnace turned on, the boys would say "the dragon's awake" and continue playing.  I wrote the story a few years later. (On my Commodore64.  It was that long ago.)

After publishing my first novel, SEAMS16:A New Home, and while I was working on my second, SEAMS16:Arrival, I thought of that old story and asked my brother, Lanin, if he would be interested in illustrating it.  He agreed, so I dug the story out and looked it over.  I've learned a lot about writing since then, so I gave the story an overhaul before passing it on to Lanin.  I publicly asked for help in naming the story and my niece's daughters (age 3 & 5) suggested "Sam and the Dragon".
Works for me. --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

I don't usually review. I believe all works of literature will take you somewhere, it's just that some roads are less bumpy than others; however, when my little one wants to reread a story, I know it's a winner for children, and the word needs to put out that it has the potential to take young children on a grand adventure----one on which they may wish to go over and over again!

As for myself: I have now read "Sam and the Dragon" six times. Eric B. Thomasma combines ingenuity with imagination (not to mention Fantasy's ultimate archetype of warmth----the dragon!) to give children a wonderful perspective on home heating! I will never see my furnace in the same ole' light again!

"I wish I had a dragon! I wish I had a dragon!"

"Sam and the Dragon" is a delightful, inspirational read, which is excellent for small children. The boy Sam befriends a dragon named Freness, who keeps his family warm during cold winters. The simplicity of the story along with the nicely done illustration carries the reader along with Sam's experience that ends on a beautiful, positive note. I recommend this book for parents with small children, as it brings dragons together with people in the form of close friendship, a valuable message for kids. Five stars!

Can you imagine living in a small villiage? I can. Can you imagine everyone leaving in the winter? I can. Now, can you imagine being so curious about what happens to your home in the winter that you hide and stay behind to see? I can. And so can this talented author and his wife. Eric and Lanin Thomasma have created a children's book that fires up the imagination and calms the fears of childhood. As we follow our hero through the cold winter, we meet his new friend and safekeeper - a dragon. With the dragon to warm him, our boy hero not only survives but helps his entire villiage. I don't want to give away the story, so let's just say that this tale addresses and eases one of the common fears of childhood. If I had read this story I wouldn't have been afraid to go down to my basement.

Sam and the Dragon is a delightful story. It brings magic into the everyday. The illustrations are wonderful and add much to the story. I can't wait to read this to my grandson. I highly recommend this work of art.
