This review is from: Sam & Max Surfin the Highway Anniversary Edition (Perfect Paperback)
The classic Sam & Max stories by Steve Purcell are finally back, and they're still a lot of fun. This book contains all the Sam & Max comics a fan will ever need, being an updated reprint of Surfin' the Highway, the book you always wanted but could never afford. Most of the comics are in black and white, but in the back there is a fairly extensive collection of colour comics and artwork. You won't be bored with this soon.

As for the execution, it's very well done. It might sound surprising to hear that the publisher is actually a game company (Telltale Games, who created the excellent new Sam & Max episodes), considering that the book looks so good. It's well designed, and it looks great on your shelf (its size is about half of a regular comic book). One thing that I also liked is that art that spreads across two pages is printed in such a way that you don't miss out on what's going on in the centre of the book.

In short, if you're a Sam & Max fan, you need to own this. If you're not familiar with Sam & Max but you like quirky humour and beautiful art, you need to get this as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surreal absurdist humor, May 18, 2008
This review is from: Sam & Max Surfin the Highway Anniversary Edition (Perfect Paperback)
I'd been looking for this for years used, but it was always too expensive. The book is a set of comic books (mostly in black and white)and some new panels the author put together. The humor is along the lines of "Zippy the Pinhead" and "The Far Side" and "Invader Zim" and some of Doug Tennapel's strange humor. In a word, it's pretty bizarre and pokes fun at everything but the kitchen sink (wait, I think that got a drubbing as well). I found the humor to generally be pretty funny. Even for the occasional "groaner" there's always spate of one-liners following to laugh at. The artwork is incredibly detailed and there's always something weird and amusing going on in the background, be it rats stripping a car or roaches running a marathon. This isn't a perverted comic by any stretch of the imagination, it's just outlandish and fun. If you have an appreciation for wacky humor, you'll love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sam & Max comics available, at least !, March 16, 2008
This review is from: Sam & Max Surfin the Highway Anniversary Edition (Perfect Paperback)
After many years of unsuccessful researches for Sam & Max Surfin the Highway, the complete comics saga is now available for everyone !
What a pleasure to see the two craziest furry detectives back on paper again !
The paperback edition is yet very beautiful, with and old-fashioned embossed cover, and contains the whole contents of the previous editions, plus some full-coloured exclusive material.
May you already know Sam & Max typical universe or not, I really recommend it if you like humour, nonsense, and irreverence.

As a long-time fan of the original LucasArts PC game and later the cartoon series and Telltale Games game, I was running out of ways to scratch the Freelance Police itch!

Luckily, this came along and reminded me of where everyone's (well, mine anyway) favourite six-foot talking dog and psychopathic Lagomorph (look it up) originally came from. Excellent stuff.

Or, at least, something quite close to it. I won't go into too much detail. Heck, all the other reviews tell you about the art and yadda yadda. I'll just say that you HAVE to own it. What better thing to own than an anthropomorphic two piece suit loving canine, who doesn't wear underwear, and a rabbity thing with a need for violence? If you can seriously answer with anything but "nothing"...I don't think I want to associate with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zanny comic mischief. A MUST for Sam and Max Fans!, March 22, 2010

This review is from: Sam & Max Surfin the Highway Anniversary Edition (Perfect Paperback)
I got the original Sam & Max Surfin the Highway graphic novel when I was in high school from the local comic shop. By the time I was finishing college the book was worn, torn, and abused from all my friends borrowing, and enjoying, it's comic-y (not a word) goodness. Thank heavens I have finally been able to replace my tattered copy of Surfin the Highway with this Anniversary Edition. Steve Purcell is like some lunatic genius - where else can one find a story ending with the abrupt and totally unreferenced "Rubber Baby Pants Commandos" bursting through the ceiling being led by a talking chimpanzee in a diaper? If you have any slight interest in Sam and Max, and enjoy its offbeat humor, you NEED to read the original comics - you won't regret it!

i bought this on a whim as i was getting the DVD boxset of the cartoon for my nephew. the comic is great and funny, if you're into the weird type of humor that's offered. don't expect anything that makes sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Funniest Comics In The Universe, January 22, 2010

This review is from: Sam & Max Surfin the Highway Anniversary Edition (Perfect Paperback)
I've never read a comic so hilarious. It was by chance that I stumbled upon this book on the internet, and for the heck of it decided to spend what ever money I had in the bank to get it. Thanks to Surfin' The Highway, I am now a huge fan of the world of Sam & Max! Most funny pages have to go through a page or two to get to the punch line, but Sam & Max has a gut busting, seizure inducing laugh on almost ever panel. All Sam & Max need is just one moment to deliver a smart-assed remark that'll leave you in stitches. Not only that, but this book also got me over my fear of cops! I swear there has to be some cosmic shift in between the real world and cartoon world, because Max has to be my long lost twin brother!
