I love good food. I love how it smells, tastes and feels. But more importantly, I love how it brings people together, around a table, to share a meal. Even though feeding is a very intimate act that we should all approach responsibly, it is also fun and a great way of experiencing simple pleasure.
Sam Mogannam is the founder of the Bi-Rite Family of Businesses.
Starting with Bi-Rite Market in 1998, Sam has played a central role in reviving the community surrounding Dolores Park in San Francisco's Mission District. Bi-Rite Market has become San Francisco's premier neighborhood market specializing in sustainably produced and farm direct products.
In 2006, Sam opened Bi-Rite Creamery, with his wife Anne and business partner Kris Hoogerhyde, a destination for lovers of organic, artisanally-produced ice cream.
Sam also co-founded 18 Reasons, an education center and gallery space dedicated to deepening relationships within the community to food and those that produce it.
In the late summer of 2011, Sam will partner with Calvin Tsay to open a second Bi-Rite Market on Divisadero Street in the up and coming NOPA neighborhood of San Francisco.
Sam will publish his first book, Bi-Rite Market's EAT GOOD FOOD, a Grocer's Guide to Shopping, Cooking and Creating Community through Food on October 18, 2011.
Sam volunteers on the board for the National Association of the Specialty Food Trade and is on the advisory council for CAFF (community alliance with family farmers) and The Good Food Awards.
In his spare time, Sam works on his half acre farm in Sonoma with his two daughters, Zoe and Olive and works out at Boot Camp in Dolores Park.
