About the Author

Francine Jacobs is the author of 24 books for children, including the Reading Rainbow Feature Selection Sam the Sea Cow, illustrated by Laura Kelly and Lonesome George the Giant Tortoise, illustrated by Jean Cassels. The story of Lonesome George appealed to her because it describes the discovery and rescue of a truly unique creature. She lives with her husband, Jerome Jacobs, in Pleasantville, New York.

Manatees are very cute and they are always fun to enjoy in classic literature. "Sam the Sea Cow" is no exception. Francine Jacobs and Laura Kelly combine to create a powerful and moving adventure into the underwater world of the manatees. From the adorable beginning to heart-wrenching tragedy all the way to the poignant ending, "Sam the Sea Cow" is a treat for any manatee devotee. "Above and beyond five stars!" raved Chessie. "Beautiful and touching," gushed Temba and Colossate. But this book can best be described in the words of Sam the Sea Cow himself: "Very manatee."

We purchased this book for our 7-year old who needed to do a school report on a sea animal. She enjoyed reading about "Sam" and found a lot of useful information in the book. The illustrations were charming as well as accurate (from what we could tell based on internet photographs we compared it to). An interesting creature and a fun story.

Nice book, though it only gets 4 stars because even though the illustrations were well-done and the creatures cute, the colors used seemed a little washed out. For a child, more vibrancy would have been good.
