Book Description

February 11, 2008
Twenty years ago, Sam & Max burst onto the indie comic book scene with a daring venture to the Philippines (drawn entirely without reference) called Monkeys Violating the Heavenly Temple. Today they're the stars of an Eisner-nominated webcomic and a successful episodic game series. Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell and Telltale are celebrating these milestones with the this new edition of the Sam & Max comic book collection, Surfin' the Highway. In addition to all of the content of the 1995 original, the new edition contains 25 pages of content developed over the last two decades, bringing the page count to 197 with 45 pages in full color. The new content includes advertisements for the original Freelance Police comic book, a color version of Fair Wind to Java and recent paintings promoting Telltale's Sam & Max games and the upcoming DVD release of the Sam & Max Freelance Police animated series.

Great fun March 29, 2008
The classic Sam & Max stories by Steve Purcell are finally back, and they're still a lot of fun. This book contains all the Sam & Max comics a fan will ever need, being an updated reprint of Surfin' the Highway, the book you always wanted but could never afford. Most of the comics are in black and white, but in the back there is a fairly extensive collection of colour comics and artwork. You won't be bored with this soon.

As for the execution, it's very well done. It might sound surprising to hear that the publisher is actually a game company (Telltale Games, who created the excellent new Sam & Max episodes), considering that the book looks so good. It's well designed, and it looks great on your shelf (its size is about half of a regular comic book). One thing that I also liked is that art that spreads across two pages is printed in such a way that you don't miss out on what's going on in the centre of the book.

In short, if you're a Sam & Max fan, you need to own this. If you're not familiar with Sam & Max but you like quirky humour and beautiful art, you need to get this as well.

I'd been looking for this for years used, but it was always too expensive. The book is a set of comic books (mostly in black and white)and some new panels the author put together. The humor is along the lines of "Zippy the Pinhead" and "The Far Side" and "Invader Zim" and some of Doug Tennapel's strange humor. In a word, it's pretty bizarre and pokes fun at everything but the kitchen sink (wait, I think that got a drubbing as well). I found the humor to generally be pretty funny. Even for the occasional "groaner" there's always spate of one-liners following to laugh at. The artwork is incredibly detailed and there's always something weird and amusing going on in the background, be it rats stripping a car or roaches running a marathon. This isn't a perverted comic by any stretch of the imagination, it's just outlandish and fun. If you have an appreciation for wacky humor, you'll love this book!

By Francis
After many years of unsuccessful researches for Sam & Max Surfin the Highway, the complete comics saga is now available for everyone !
What a pleasure to see the two craziest furry detectives back on paper again !
The paperback edition is yet very beautiful, with and old-fashioned embossed cover, and contains the whole contents of the previous editions, plus some full-coloured exclusive material.
May you already know Sam & Max typical universe or not, I really recommend it if you like humour, nonsense, and irreverence.
